Mission Statement and Vision

Mission Statement: The HBCU Movement was created to raise awareness and
promote the various opportunities and scholarships that Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUs) offer through community outreach.

Vision: The HBCU Movement aims to increase the amount of Missouri students
attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities on scholarships. We have
simplified the scholarship search by producing an annual brochure and an annual
scholarship chart that lists over 50 academic scholarships to over 30 Historically
Black Colleges and Universities across the nation. High school students can use our
HBCU scholarship chart to quickly find scholarships they qualify for based on their
GPA and ACT score. We also work with students to provide an individualized
preparation plan before they leave for college.

Disclaimer: The HBCU Movement does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed,
color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression,
age, height, weight, physical or mental ability, veteran status, military obligations, and
marital status. We encourage students and parents to research more information about
their prospective schools or scholarships after they use our scholarship
chart. The HBCU Movement maintains no responsibility or liability for prospective
students that use our academic scholarship chart as scholarship requirements and
amounts are subject to change.

If you are thinking about signing up
for a student loan to pay for college
STOP AND ASK yourself
three questions

1. Could a HBCU pay for my

education partially or entirely?

2. Are there trade careers that I

can pursue that will minimize
my debt and provide a good
salary?

3. Do I have enough education

about student loans to
understand what I am signing?

Frequently Asked Questions about HBCUs
What is a HBCU?
HBCUs were created before 1964 to educate African Americans who could not attend
various universities due to discrimination and segregation.

Who can attend an HBCU?

Anyone can attend a Historically Black College or University. HBCUs do not
discriminate based on race, creed, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, gender expression, age, height, weight, physical or mental ability, veteran
status, military obligations, and marital status.

How do I know the education I am receiving is a quality education?

STEP 1: Colleges and universities should be accredited by a federal recognized
accreditor that is approved or recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. There is
a national database of accredited post-secondary institutions on the official U.S
Department of Education website.

STEP 2: Your major and career path should be accredited by a national or regional
accrediting association.

Example: Our president and founder, Sharita Wright, attended Jackson State University
in Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson State University is accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools. The Southern Association is federally recognized
by the U.S. Department of Education. Her major was Social Work. The Social Work
program at Jackson State is accredited by a national accrediting association called The
National Association of Social Workers. This accrediting agency is approved by the U.S
Department of Education

What is accreditation and why does it matter?

Accreditation is a form of accountability to ensure schools meets strict standards and are
qualified to educate students. Schools that receive federal funding are required to go
through rigorous evaluations by federally recognized accrediting associations.

Accreditation ensures that the colleges and universities have

 sufficient resources
 updated curriculum
 sufficient faculty
 sufficient facilities and student services

Part of the Accreditation process includes

 evaluating the quality of coursework and teaching
 assessing student’s learning
 determining if the faculty has sufficient experience to teach an academic class or
major

Frequently Asked Questions-- HBCU Scholarship Chart
What is an Academic Scholarship Chart?
A collection or list of over 50 scholarships and their requirements offered by
various HBCUs.

How do I use the Academic Scholarship Chart?

The HBCUs are categorized by alphabet. Each HBCU on this inventory will have a
name of a scholarship they offer along with what the scholarships covers or
provides. Deadlines and scholarship requirements such as the required GPA and
ACT score are also listed.

How was the scholarship data gathered? When was this data gathered? Is the
data always accurate?
The scholarship data listed on the scholarship chart was gathered from direct phone
calls and emails to financial aid advisors and counselors of various HBCUs.
Financial aid advisors and counselors were contacted between June 2020-September
2020 to verify information. It is important to note that the scholarships listed on this
inventory are tentative and could change at any time. Universities and colleges
reserve the right to change scholarship criteria or amounts at any time of the year.
This inventory should not be used as a sole piece of research or information. The
HBCU Movement encourages students to research more information about their
college, university, or scholarship.

Who do I talk to if I have a question about a scholarship?

We recommend that you contact the financial aid department, financial aid
counselors, or financial aid staff of your potential school. If you need help
researching or contacting your school please contact our president and founder,
Sharita Wright. We are willing to help with researching.

Are there any scholarship requirements or information that I need to know

that is not listed on this inventory?
Yes, some scholarships require essays, recommendations or will have other
requirements that are not listed on our chart. Students and families are encouraged
to call, email, and research their scholarship, university, or college to find out more
information. If students and parents are having trouble contacting colleges please
contact our president and founder, Sharita Wright. We are willing to help with
contacting representatives and helping you research.

If there is a dollar amount listed in the section titled “Covers” is that for 4
years or per year?
The dollar amounts listed are for four years unless it specifically says per year.

Scholarship Chart Key

What is a scholarship chart key? How do I use the scholarship chart key?
The purpose of the scholarship chart key is to explain what each scholarship covers or
provides with a short abbreviation. These abbreviations will be listed under the column
titled “Covers". You can find out what your scholarships covers or provides by looking
at the column titled “Covers”.

What type of costs does The HBCU Movement focus on?

The HBCU Movement focuses on 5 aspects of college or university costs that we feel
are important: Tuition, Room and Board, School Fees, Out of State Fees and Meal
Plans.
 Tuition: The price you pay for taking classes at a university or college.
 Meal Plan: The price you pay to receive meals on campus of a university or
college.
 Room and Board: The price you pay to live on campus in a dorm or apartment.
 School Fees: Additional fees for attending a university or college such as
technology fees, activity fees, mailbox fees, laboratory fees, etc.
 Out of State Tuition Fees: Fees for students that are not a resident of the state
