Lecture – 5 Sedimentary Facies

Sedimentary Environments

Sedimentary environments are places where sediments accumulate and sedimentary

rocks form. They can be grouped into:

 Terrestrial environments (non-marine)

o Rivers (fluvial environment)

o Alluvial fans

o Lakes (lacustrine environment)

o Swamps

o Deserts (aeolian environment)

o Glacial environment

o Inland Sabkha and Playa

 Marine environments

o Continental shelf

o Continental slope and rise (deep sea fans)

o Abyssal plain

o Reefs

 Transitional environments (at the transition between the marine and non-
marine environments)

o Beach and barrier islands

o Delta

o Lagoons

o Estuaries
Facies is a depositional environment characterized by its own sediment, fauna, flora
and depositional processes.

Facies - the characteristics of a unit of sediments, which can be used to interpret the
depositional environment.

Depositional System is an assemblage of process-related sedimentary facies.
