Joseph Franz Wagner
DOB: 1858 (Vienna, Austria)
DOD: 1908 (Vienna, Austria)
Joseph Franz Wagner was the son of a doctor and an
accomplished singer in his youth. Following studies in
harmony, form, counterpoint, and instrumentation at the
Royal Military Institute in Kaschau, Hungary, Wagner
undertook a tour of duty in the army. By age 22, he was
th
appointed bandmaster of the Royal 47 Infantry Regiment
Band in Vienna, Marburg, and Graz, and in 1892, became
th
bandmaster of the 49 Infantry Regiment.
In addition to conducting military bands, Wagner conducted his own civilian ensembles for the
Viennese public, and, was very popular as a conductor and composer. He was highly productive,
composing at least 250 published works and, it is believed, over 800 compositions. Wagner is
considered the “Austrian March King.”

Louis-Philippe Laurendeau

DOB: 1861 (St. Hyacinthe, Canada)

DOD: 1916 (Montreal, Canada)
Laurendeau, Louis-Philippe. Composer, writer, b St-Hyacinthe, Que,
1861, d Montreal 13 Feb 1916. He was active for many years in
Montreal and was bandmaster at the École militaire of Saint-Jean, but
later he devoted himself entirely to composition and arranging. Though
a resident of Longueuil (near Montreal), he occupied an editorial
position with Carl Fischer, the New York publishers.
Some 200 of Laurendeau's compositions and arrangements, mostly for
band and published by Fischer and Cundy-Bettoney, are listed in F.
Pazdírek's Universal-Handbuch (Vienna 1904-10). His intermezzo Twilight Whispers, Opus 202, won
first prize in the 1895 Metronome competition. Works of specific Canadian interest include Shores of
the St Lawrence, a medley for band, and Land of the Maple, Opus 235, a march.

Laurendeau taught as well, and Fischer published several of his volumes of band instruction and
repertoire, including The New Era Band Book (Grades 2, 3) and The Practical Band Arranger. He
used the pseudonym Paul Laurent, but the National Library of Canada has record of only one
1
publication on which it appears. A Montreal street was named after Laurendeau in 1931.

Under the Double Eagle, Op. 159 (march). Written about 1888 and first published by Musikverlag
Adolf Robitschek (Wiesbaden, West Germany), Wagner took the title for this march from the state

emblem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The double-headed eagle was the symbol of the Byzantine
Empire for over 2,000 years before it appeared on the imperial coat of arms in Austria-Hungary.

It is interesting to note that the march was probably used more for dancing than marching. And, it
has been used by county and western fiddlers in the United States for so long that many believe the
st
composer was from Nashville, Tennessee. The march became the official regimental march of the 1
Austrian Artillery Regiment Number 2.

A summary of his complete works include one rather unsuccessful operetta, numerous overtures, concertos, songs, and other concert works. He is most
remembered for his waltzes and marches
