Strategies for Teaching Mathematics

1. Math Manipulatives
Allowing the students to use math manipulatives is a great way for
students to gain an understanding of the material. Many students are
“hands on” learners and they can greatly benefit from different math
manipulatives.
2. Using Visuals
Other students are visual learners, they need to watch someone else
solve the problem before attempting to do it themselves. The strategy
can easily be done through scaffolding and demonstrations to the
classroom.
3. Math Games
Math Games are a fun and interactive way to get students engaged in
the topic of math. This can also be a good homework assignment, have
the students create a math game in class and then take it home to play
with their parent or guardian.
4. Technology
Technology is another fun way to get students involved in math.
Teaching students how to use calculators can be a way of introducing
technology, but you can also play different math games on the
computer or morning work or before the school day is over.
5. Literature
There is so many great math childrens book. Before a certain math
topic, read a childrens book about what the lesson will be about, and
this will promote the student interest and they will start to think about
the upcoming lesson.
6. Offer Choices
No student is the same, so offering choices about what math activity
they want to do can be a great way to keep the student’s interest. You
can offer different methods of assessment and ask the students which
they are most interested in doing.
7. Encourage “Math Talk”
By encouraging “Math Talk” you are introducing a new vocabulary to
the students that they may not have heard before. This will engage the
student as they learn new words and phrases about mathematics.
8. Math Journals
Math Journals are a super fun way to get the student to interact in the
math lesson. They would have the opportunity to make flipbook,
pockets, and other fun things to their math notes to keep the student
engaged and promote math outside of the classroom.
9. Learning Centers
Learning Centers are great for students who do well in small groups. By
working together, the groups can solve different math problems and
practice with each other.
10. Flashcards
Flashcards can be used in any area of math, they can be easily adapted
to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, time, place value,
fractions and so on. They are an easy way for the student to practice
different math facts and can be a great study tool.
11. White Boards
Using white boards in the classroom can be great for lessons where the
teacher is in the front of the class and wants to see what the student’s
answers are. The students are able to write on the white board and
hold it up for the teacher without other students seeing. It is a great
way for the teacher to understand how their students are doing with the
lesson.
12. Music in Math
Music in Math can be a fun way of remembering different math facts.
There are many different sites that have catchy tunes to help students
remember their math facts.
13. Partner Work
Working with a partner in math can be a great way for students to put
their head together to think about a question or problem. They are
able to rely information back to each other and come up with the best
possible answer
14. Calendar Math
Calendar Math is a great way to get the students thinking about how
days, week, months, and years fits into math. They are able to start to
understand why it is important to learn mathematics.
15. Math in our Everyday Lives
Giving the student an opportunity to explore math in their lives will give
the students a purpose to become engaged in the lesson. When a
teacher explains that time, measurements, and money is used in our
daily lives it sparks an interest in the student.
16. Famous Mathematicians
Learning about famous mathematicians can really inspire a student,
especially when you have a diverse group of mathematicians to share
with the class. This makes the student realize that they are capable of
solving different level math problems.
17. Math in Sports
Different Sports require a lot of math, students are also extremely
interested in sports. Explaining to the students that these topics go hand
in hand will entice the student to learn more about the topic at hand.
18. Baking
There are many math facts in baking, particularly fractions. Using
measuring cups to demonstrate fractions can be an easy why of ensuring
your students understand fractions and what they are.
19. Field Trips
Field Trips are a fun way of allowing the students to explore the
community around them. Taking a trip to the science center would be
a good field trip for the students to understand many different areas in
math and how people use it to create different things
20. Math in Nature
Allowing the students to sit outside and observe the different math skills
outside and be a great way for students to be creative about math.
There are many different patterns that happen outside that are easily
related to math, and can get the students interested.
