Moodle Quick Tour for Students

A brief overview of Moodle, the Learning Management System (LMS) used at Sorsogon
State College for online courses.

Accessing and Logging into Moodle

Direct Access: http://www.lms.sorsogonstatecollege.edu.ph

Log into Moodle: On the Login Authentication page, type your Username and Password.

Note: Each student will be given account once you enrolled in Sorsogon State College

For your first login, you are required to change your password.

Moodle Profile

Your Moodle Profile page can be viewed only by certain other individuals. For example,
students cannot view each other's profiles, but an instructor can view the profiles of the
students enrolled in a course they are teaching.

Profile settings also impact privacy to some degree. You can choose to hide your email
address from others, or choose to upload a photo to display when you contribute to a
forum.

1. From the User menu (top-right, your name and profile picture), select Profile.
Your Profile page opens.
2. On your Profile page under User details, click Edit profile (at right). The Edit
profile page opens.
3. On the Edit profile page, we recommend you consider the following settings:
o From the Email display drop-down menu choose between:
    Hide my email address from non-privileged users: Privileged
users such as teachers and managers will always be able to see
your email address.  Students cannot hide emails from teachers,
but this will hide your email from other students. Note: Hiding your
email address does not prevent Moodle from sending you emails; it
prevents other Moodle users from seeing your email address.
Messages sent by you through Moodle will display your name and
have a reply-to address of <noreply@moodle.umass.edu>.
    Allow everyone (in Moodle) to see my email address: This
can't really happen, but the setting is there. It is essentially the
same as the next option (Allow only people in your courses to see
my email address).
Allow only other course members to see my email address

(default).
o To display a person avatar that will display in discussion posts, click
the User Picture heading to expand the page and upload an image file.
4. To save changes to settings, click Update profile. You'll be returned to your
Profile page.

Find Your Courses

1. Once you have logged into Moodle all of your courses show up in alphabetical
order in your "My Courses" list.

If you do not see your course in your Moodle My Courses List:

 The course may not yet be "visible" to students.  Check later or ask
your professor.

If you are still having problems, contact the SSC-MIS Dept.

Dashboard

For an overview of upcoming deadlines in all your Moodle courses, from the Navigation
tray, select Dashboard. This page lists all of the courses you are currently enrolled in
and allows you to quickly navigate to new assignments.

Moodle Course Component Terminology and Iconography

Below are the major types of Activities and Resources in Moodle.  Once you understand
the Icons used in Moodle you will better know what to expect when you click on a
Moodle component.

1.  Announcements are a special type of forum.  Only your

professor can "post" an announcement, but everyone in the course receives an email of
the announcement.  You can also see and review all current and past announcements in
the Announcement forum, just in case you delete that important emailed announcement.

2.  Assignments are activities that learners complete in a Moodle course often with a
specific due date and other expectations. Read each assignment's instructions carefully.

3. Learners submit your work to the assignment in one of two ways:

1. Online Text Assignment: Your professor asks you to type or paste your
assignment into an "Online Text" box in the assignment.
2. File Upload Assignment:  Your professor asks you to upload your assignment as
a file (word, powerpoint, excel or other) to the assignment.

4. Forums are the location for class conversations between the participants in the
course.

There are two main forum discussion types used by faculty:

1. Standard Forum:  Each course participant can either "Add a new discussion
topic" or "Reply" to an existing conversation topic.
2. Q & A Forum: In the Q & A Forum the Professor adds the discussion topics
(Questions) and Learners can only "REPLY" to each Topic thread or to other
replies to within a topic thread.

5.  Quizzes (or tests) can range from multiple choice to essay with many different
types of questions.  Moodle grades multiple choice tests as soon as you complete the
test, however more complex question types or a test with mixed question types may
require "Advanced Grading" feedback (grading) from your professor after they review
and grade the exam.

6. Web Page links to an outside resource on the internet.

7. Moodle Page Resource is a "sub-page" of your Moodle course.  It may contain a

movie, pictures, text, or other resources provided by your professor.
8.  PDF file that has been made available to download or read online by your
professor. PDF files may be downloaded or opened in your browser depending on your
professor's settings selections. Try right-clicking on the link to download or open in a
new tab/window.  If you are requested to fill in a PDF you should download the PDF file
first and then open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
9.  Moodle Text Editor Tools:  Moodle Text Editor Tools assist you in your work in Moodle
assignments, forums, quizzes where you complete work in the Moodle environment.

Taking Quiz

Your instructor can deliver quizzes in Moodle using a variety of question types, including
multiple choice, true-false, short answer, numeric questions, and more. Quizzes may be
configured in different ways, so do not expect to always see the same thing when you take a
quiz. For example, you may see quiz results as soon as you finish all the questions or even as
you submit each question, or you may need to wait until after the quiz deadline or until all
submitted quizzes are graded before results are released.

Take a Quiz

1. Log in to Moodle and navigate to your course, then locate the link for the quiz you wish
take.
o Quiz links will always be located within the Sections that are stacked down the
center of the page.
o You can also access any released quizzes through the Activities block. Click the
Quizzes link for a list of links to available quizzes for the course.
2. Click the link to the quiz. The Quiz page will open showing a summary of information
about the quiz. This may include:
o The grading method.
o The number of times you can retake the quiz (called "attempts").
o The date range the quiz is available to take.
o The time limit for taking the quiz.
3. To begin, click Attempt quiz now. A confirmation page will remind you of any time
restrictions or limited number of attempts.
Note: If your quiz is interrupted, you can return to the quiz and click Continue the last
attempt to resume your work, even if you lose your connection to Moodle, as long as the
deadline for the quiz has not passed.
4. Quizzes may have one or more questions per page. The way you answer each question
may vary based on the question type. Please note:
o For multiple page quizzes, you can use the Quiz navigation panel (on the right) to
move between quiz pages. The panel will show your progress as well as how
much time you have remaining if your instructor set a time limit for the quiz. If
free navigation is enabled by the instructor, you can use the Quiz navigation
panel to move to another page or return to complete any unanswered
questions. Completed questions will be highlighted differently from unanswered
questions in the Quiz navigation panel.
o For some quiz and/or question types, you will need to click Submit to ensure
your answer is recorded.
o For questions without submit buttons, enter your answers and click Next (on the
bottom) to continue.
5. When you have reached the end of a quiz, the Summary of attempt page will open. This
page lists the quiz questions and indicates which ones have been answered. To return
to a question for review, or to complete an unanswered question, click the Question
number.
6. Important! When you are satisfied with your answers, click Submit all and finish to
finalize the quiz attempt.
Note: You will not be able to change any answers after you submit and finish the quiz
attempt.

View Your Grades

To view your grades in a particular course:

1. Log into Moodle and open the course.

2. On the course homepage, in the Navigation tray toggle (hamburger menu , top left)
click Grades. The User report page opens to show all graded activities where your
grades have been released, as well as feedback from your instructor (if any).
Remember, instructors can control when you see grades for specific activities, so if you
do not see all your grades, they are probably hidden until your instructor opens them to
you.
3. At the bottom of the list of graded activities, you may see, if your instructor has released
it, your Course total (a running total of your current standing in a course). Depending on
how your instructor set up the gradebook, scores may be displayed as points, as
percentages, as letter grades, or a combination thereof.
