JAVA ETHNICITY AND CULTURE

1. SUNDANESE

The Sundanese (Sundanese:  Urang Sunda) are an Austronesian ethnic group native


to the western part of the Indonesian island of Java. They number approximately 40
million, and form Indonesia's second most populous ethnic group, after the
neighboring Javanese. In their language, Sundanese, the Sundanese refer to
themselves as Urang Sunda (Sundanese: Sunda people), while Orang Sunda or Suku
Sunda is its Indonesian equivalent.

Traditional Cuisine

Typical modest Sundanese meal consist of steamed rice, salted fish, sayur


asem (tamarind dish), lalabsambal (raw vegetables salad with chilly paste)
and karedok (peanuts paste).

2. JAVANESE

Central Java is also a cultural concept that includes the Special Region and city
of Yogyakarta as well as the Province of Central Java. However, administratively the
city and its surrounding regencies have formed a separate special region(equivalent to
a province) since Indonesian independence, administrated separately.

Dance

"Karonsih", usually performed in a traditional Javanese wedding.

Traditional Clothes

Central Java is famous and well known for its exquisite batik, a generic wax-
resist dyeing technique used on textiles. There are different styles of batik motifs. A
centre of batik production is Pekalongan. Other centres
are Surakarta and Yogyakarta. Batik in Pekalongan style which represent gaya
pesisir (or coastal style) is different from the one in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, which
represent batik from the heartland of Java (gaya kejawèn).[20]
Traditional House

The architecture of Central Java is characterised by the juxtaposition of the old and the
new and a wide variety of architectural styles, the legacy of many successive influences
by the Indians, the Persians and the Arabs, the Chinese, and the Europeans. In
particular, northern coastal cities such as Semarang, Tegal and Pekalongan can boast
fine colonial European architecture..

Traditional Cuisine

Javanese complete nasi gudeg, which consist of (from bottom


clockwise):gudeg (young jackfruitcooked in coconut milk), fried chicken, egg boiled in coconut milk,
and krechek (spiced buffalo skin cracker). Gudeg is one of the most famous Javanese dishes.
Performing Art

Wayang or Javanese puppet also the famous traditional art in the central part of
Java. This traditional puppet show has been recognized by UNESCO on
November 7, 2003, as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of
Humanity. Puppet has several versions. Wayang Kulit (Shadow puppet) pretty
well known in Central Java and Yogyakarta, while the Wayang Golek is more
popular in West Java
3. MADURESE

Madura is an Indonesian island off the northeastern coast of Java. The island


comprises an area of approximately 4,078.67 km² (administratively 5,168  km²
including various smaller islands to the east and north). Madura is administered
as part of the East Javaprovince. It is separated from Java by the narrow Strait of
Madura.

Dance

Dancing Tip Of Drajat. This is dance typical of Madura depicting its(the rising prince
becomes king. Dance which is brought by of this girl Madura ordinary is showed the
scan peculiarly to greet important guest.

Traditional Clothes

When attending a formal occasion, rasugan totop worn is usually black with odheng
tongkosan kota with modang morive, dul cendul, garik  or jingga. For Madurese,
Odheng (head band) has a complex symbolical meaning from its size, motive or how to
wear.
Traditional House

Tanean Lanjhang (longhouse) is a traditional residential house inhabited by the


Madurese. Consists of a cluster of homes in the form of clusters.

Traditional Cuisine

As we know sate madura is very famous as special food of madura. Every city in
indonesia we can find food store of madura’s sate but is not in our coutry in another
counry we can find. Sate madura is made with chicken meat or goat meat, sate lalat is
dished up with spice nut, sauce, and soy sauce. Sate lalat is very delicious you are will
not bord with it’s taste.

Performing Art
The traditional festival of cow racing in Indonesia, or known as Karapan Sapi this
attraction can also called as the cow race and usually performed on the area of Madura
as a traditional culture of this place. So, this cow racing traditional festival is a kind of
ancient tradition which still held on some specific areas at Madura. The cows are always
having the opportunity to participate into this racing, and soon the race will begin.

4. EAST JAVANESE
East Java (Indonesian: Jawa Timur, abbreviated as Jatim, Javanese: Jåwå
Wétan)[4] is a province of Indonesia. Located in eastern Java, it includes the
island of Madura, which is connected to Java by the longest bridge in Indonesia,
the Suramadu Bridge, as well as the Kangean and Masalembu
archipelagos located further east and north, respectively. Its capital is Surabaya,
the second largest city in Indonesia and a major industrial center. Banyuwangi is
the largest regency in East Java and the largest on the island of Java
Dance

Remo Dance comes from Jombang, East Java. This dance is a dance that was
originally used as an introduction to the show ludruk. However, the development of this
dance is often danced separately as a speech on state guests, danced in ceremonies of
state, as well as in local arts festival. This dance is actually a prince tells of the struggle
in the battlefield. But in its development is becoming more frequent dance danced by
women, giving rise to other dance styles: Dance Remo Remo daughter or female
styles. 
Traditional Clothes

The traditional clothes of east Java looks a lot like central Java, probably because they
two are close in terms of area. This particular province has pretty famous clothes that
are brought to this day since the old times. They have two kinds of traditional clothes,
with different function and usage : manten clothes and ning & cak clothes.

Traditional House

In the traditional house of East Java which is mostly in Ponorogo has a roof shaped like
a mountain. Taking the example of this roof shape embodies the philosophy that the
house is the best protector and residence, like a mountain. The mountain is also a
symbol of the sacred things elevated by many members of the Javanese community at
that time

Traditional Cuisine

 Rujak cingur:[7] a marinated cow snout or lips and noses (cingur), served with


boiled vegetables and shrimp crackers. It is then dressed in a sauce made of
caramelized fermented shrimp paste (petis), peanuts, chili, and spices. It is usually
served with lontong, a boiled rice cake. Rujak cingur is considered traditional food
of Surabaya in East Java.
 Performing Art
LUDRUK  is one of the theatrical genres in East Java. It is a form of traditional
performance presented by a troupe of actors (or comedians) on a stage, re-telling the
life stories of everyday people and their struggles. Its origin is unclear, but it is believed
to be dated as far back as the 13th century.[1]
