The British Isles

1. Explain everything you know about the British Isles.

- Where they are?

- How many they are?

- The name of each island? How do you distinguish them?

- What countries can we find inside them?

The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwestern coast of Europe, these islands are
The Great Britain which is the biggest one and inside it we can find the countries: England,
Wales and Scotland; and Ireland which is the smallest one and the countries we can find inside
this island are Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, this last one is an independent
country, so doesn’t belong to the United Kingdom.

About the countries

2. Explain the flags.

- Explain their political situation and the currency they use.

First we have the flag of England which consists of the Saint George’s cross, then we can
identify the flag of Scotland by the cross of Saint Andrew´s cross. Then we can appreciate the
flag of Wales, it is distinguished by the symbol of the Y Ddraig Goch (the red dragon) and finally
the flag of Northern Ireland that consists of the Saint Patrick’s cross.

The Republic of Ireland belongs to the European Union and therefore, they pay in euros only.
The countries that belong to the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern
Ireland) are not part of the European Union as they are governed by Her Majesty, the Queen
and pay in pounds.

3. Where are: (Explain with your own words)

- English Channel, which is also known as the Narrow Sea or The Channel, it is between
the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea joining England and France. It separates the
Southern England from the Northern France and links the southern part of the North
Sea, has a length of 560 km and it varies in a width from 240 km at its widest to 34 km
in the Strait of Dover.
- The Channel tunnel is a 50.45 kilometer railway tunnel which comes beneath the sea
level and connects Folkestone with Calais.
- The North Sea is between Great Britain, the Scandinavian peninsula (Norway and
Sweden) and some countries from the European continent (Denmark, Germany,
Netherlands, France and Belgium) covering an area of 570,000 km2 .

- The North Channel, also known as the Irish Channel, is a narrow straight that separates
Northern Ireland from Scotland and links the Irish Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.
- The Irish Sea is between the isle of Ireland and the isle of Great Britain.
- And the countries inside them.

4. What can you tell about Scotland? (Info just from the presentation)

Scotland is country located in Northern Europe and its capital is the city of Edinburgh since at
least the 15 th century is the seat of the Scottish Government, the Parliament and the
Supreme Courts of Scotland. It´s also distinguished as the second most populous city with a
population of 488,000 people. The economy of Scotland depends mostly on the sea, more
specifically on the North Sea because of the fishing and oil. The Scottish topography is
distinguished by the “Highland Boundary Fault” which is a geological rock fracture traversing
the Scottish Mainland from Helensburgh to Stonehaven. The Northern part which is better
known as Highlands, has the most mountainous terrain in the UK, also the less populated area
due to its flat terrain (covered with moors, Wasteland). The lowlands areas in the Southern
part of Scotland are flattered and where the most of the people lives.
