Write a critical analysis of the important historical information found in Antonio

Pigafetta’s First Voyage Around the World.

based on Antonio Pigafetta’s writing, it is indeed the most significant sources in the
investigation of pre-colonial of the Philippines. This Voyage is the most cited documents in the
Pre-colonial of the Philippines because it was the earliest written accounts where we can see
the native belief system of the Filipino and their way of life. This include the story about what
happen in Philippines way back then. In my personally stance, here’s the critical analysis in

important historical information I found on Pigafetta’s first voyage around the world.

The First Voyage Around the World by Antonio Pigafetta was written on board one of the 5
ships namely Trinidad, san Antonio, conception, Victoria and Santiago it was the first to
circumnavigate the world during an expedition that was led by the Portuguese explorer,
Ferdinand Magellan. The Atlantic Ocean is the first that Magellan and his people to explored
and later on found the Pacific Ocean and named it “mar pacifico” means calm or tranquil
because that time the waves aren’t that violent.

Then they found Guam, but misfortune events happened that’s why Magellan and his troops
flew away and set fire the place of natives of Guam, they named it as land of thieves. Later on,
they arrived in island called Humunu (homonhon) and describe it as place of good sign because
it is like a paradise that surrounded by water. Later on, they met Rajah of Cebu named Rajah
Humabon, the rajah demanded they need to pay tribute as it is customary but Magellan refused,
he said that he was the captain himself and thus would not pay tribute to other king.

Before the known of battle of Mactan. The chief of island of Mactan named Zula, sent his sons
to present a gift to captain general(Ferdinand Magellan), because they had a promised, but he
had not been able to send it because of Chief CILAPUPU(Lapu-Lapu), the one who refused to
obey the king of spagnia (Spain). The captain general decides to go thither with 3 boatloads,
Antonio pegafettas begged him not go but he insists. Antonio Pegafetta describe him as Good
shepherd, he just didn’t want to abandon his flock.

At midnight , they reached MACTAN , 3 hours before dawn. Their captain, Ferdinand Magellan,
didn’t wish to fight and sent a message to natives. They said that if they obey the king of
SPAGNIA (Spain), and recognized the Christian king as sovereign and pay tribute they would
be their friend, but the other things happen, the other group wants them to see their lance’s
wounded. In the morning they leaped on the water and the fight starts between Magellan’s
group and the natives.

Captain general sent men in native’s place to burn their houses to terrify them, but they native
roused to greater fury. The captain shot in the right leg with poisoned arrow so he orders them
to retire slowly in the fight scene. Native shot them, but their arrow only hits some of the legs of
the men because they have shield, Moreover, the captain act firmly like a knight, but an Indian
hurled a bamboo spear into captain’s face and later he died. Antonio Pegafetta describe
Magellan as their true guide because he understands sea charts and navigation. The battle was
happened on Saturday, April 27 1521, because it was the day especially holy to him. Only 15
were killed and many of troops of Magellan were wounded so they retreated. Later on

the king known what was happened and the captain Magellan was dead. The king sent a
message to the consent of people of Mactan, that if they would give them the
captain(Ferdinand Magellan corpse) and other men who had been killed in the battle, they
would give them any merchandise as they wished. But the people would not give up. They just
want intended to keep him a memorial or a trophy.

From the original five ships set to sail ( San Antonio, Concepcion, Victoria, Trinidad and
Santiago) only Victoria returned to Spain. And from the original 237 men only 18 men survived.
