Reflection: Jamairah S. Cosain XI-Sr. Gonzague

Mang Serapio is put on trial for caring for a doll that he sees as his daughter, violating rules of the Federation of the Poor that reduce their monetary contributions. During the trial, the judges ask Mang Serapio random questions to test his mental state. However, the narrator realizes Mang Serapio is not actually mentally insane, as he can still distinguish fantasy from reality and understands his real daughter is deceased - the doll only helps ease his mind. The syndicate judges people based on how much they have suffered, so Mang Serapio's violations are understandable as he was caring for his perceived daughter.

REFLECTION

In the play “Ang Paglilitis kay Mang Serapio” it says there that in life there
three types of person: The rich, middle class, and poor. There is a person who is
sent to a trial for a crime of caring for a child as it reduces monetary contributions
to the "Pederasyon ng mga Pulubi" and also accused of a crime which led to his
suffering, he is Mang Serapio. Federation has a rules and if a person will not bide
the rules, there are punishments according to the Law of Federation. While he
was accused, the judge said that the members of Mang Serapio which are the
poor persons wants to watch him. The 2 judged asking him some questions like
“do you have a child?” then he answered “yes”, suddenly they asked him some
randomly questions.

When I watched intensively the play I realized that Mang Serapio was actually not
a mentally insane guy. This was because he can still distinguish fantasy from
reality. He treated his doll Sol as if it was his daughter but not entirely because his
mind is still of this world; knowing that his daughter was already dead thus the
doll for him only serves as a thing to ease his mind of the situation which he is in.
Syndicate judge people according to the degree of hurt the person is in thus the
more injury the more you are respected. Yes, Mang Serapio contrary the rules but
somehow he did that thing because he’s taking care of his daughter “Sol”.
