The key takeaways are that the document discusses the requirements and evaluation criteria for a highway engineering assignment, including identifying and planning a new highway route, designing earthworks, bridges and tunnels, and assessing related construction methods.

The submission requirements include submitting a formal report of 3000-5000 words with a title page, table of contents, introduction, case study sections, and references. Diagrams must be included and sources cited properly using the Harvard referencing system.

The grading criteria cover two learning outcomes - evaluating how a new highway is identified and designed, and assessing earthworks, bridge and tunneling methods. The criteria include analyzing, reviewing, evaluating, preparing outlines and discussing at pass, merit and distinction levels.

Assignment title A 1 of 2 Evaluation of a new highway infrastructure

Scenario
A highway is the main public road that connects different cities, towns and villages
together. It is a major and significant public road that is able and fit to carry fairly
heavy traffic. With the help of good transportation systems, not only public were able
to communicate safety and comfortably without having to spend much of their
precious time on travelling but also it can lead to a better flow of goods which plays
the main role for the development of economic and the environment where we all live.
Obviously, it is vital to have good quality highway system especially for developing
countries to transform into the sophisticated society. Myanmar is the developing
country and for those reasons, the government enforced the Ministry of Construction
to construct the new Mandalay-Naypyidaw highway road which will create more
proactive in developing innovative highway solutions. You are a road construction
engineer of Ministry of Construction and your project teams have to construct a new
route for a highway in order to produce more creative and resourceful solutions for
the future. Therefore, your project team is responsible to analyze to prepare the
project report. Your report should be two parts.

Part 1: Planing and designing of a new highway

According to scenario, for developing a new highway route, firstly you have to analyse
how the route of a new section of highway is identified and planned by highlighting
the required legal procedures. In this you have been follow the instructions below:
- Selection of highway alignment
- Land acquisition processes
- Environmental impact assessment

For geometric design purpose, you have to analyze daily traffic data for determining
the current traffic on a section of highway project. Therefore, solve the following
problem:

Unit 42 HE A1 July 2020 CDC 3

(a) Traffic data was counted at Mandalay- Ta Da Oo highway section as shown below.
You have to determine daily traffic volume (PCU/day) for this region. To achieve
daily traffic volume (PCU/day) for study area, you can used the value of hourly
expansion factor (HEF) = 17.11. The related general information are as follow:

- Location : Mandalay- Ta Da Oo highway section

- Date : 1.3.2020
- Time : 8:15 am – 8:30 am
- Duration : 15 minute (short count)
- Weather : It was initially a sunny day but afterwards it became cloudy
Time Vehicle Types
Cars Motorcycle 3 Wheeler Bus Express NMT Total
8:15– 8:30
225 45 85 8 12 49 424

- Method : Manual Method

* PCU = Passenger Car Unit

Secondly you have to review a schematic design by means of calculations, including

workings, to show their achievement of a solution to the following cases:

(b) Sketch the longitudinal profile, cross-section and show the stationing of the key
points along the road-way for the following conditions.

- Degree of curvature, D = 8˚
- Design speed = 40mph
- Width of pavement = 36 ft
- Amount of normal crown = 3 in
1
- Allowable maximum rate of superelevation =
15
- Maximum superelevation runoff = 1:200
- Normal crown ends at station = 20+00
Assume that the side friction is neglected and superelevation is obtained by
revolving the road surface about the center line or crown.

Part 2: Assess the methods of earthwork operations, bridges and tunnelling

In highway engineering, assessment methods take place an important role. Therefore

in your report, you have to evaluate all the anticipated earthwork operations for a

Unit 42 HE A1 July 2020 CDC 4

major new highway including difficult terrain and solve the following problem:

(a) A cutting is to be made through ground where the cross-slope varies

considerably. At station A, a depth of cut was 3.6 m at the centreline and the cross
slope was 8 to 1. At station B, the corresponding figures were 3m and the cross
slope was 12 to 1 and at station C, a depth of cut was 4.2 m at the centreline and
the cross slope was 10 to 1. The distance between AB and BC are each 30 m
respectively. The formation width is 10 m and the side slope is 1.5 to 1. Calculate
the volume of cutting between station A and C.

During working the earthwork operations for a major new highway in difficult terrain,
you met with the different grading conditions to obtain smoothing alignment.
Therefore, you need to draw the types of summit curves and valley curves for various
condition of grade. And then, the following criteria are needed to be considered in
your earthwork operation process:

- Geotechnical investigation
- Soil stabilisation techniques
- Formation of embankments and cause of failures

And then, you have to need forming of a tunnel section on the proposed new highway.
Therefore, you should prepare an outlines of design and method statements for the
forming of a tunnel section. It should include:

- Alignment of tunnel section

- Types of tunnel and construction techniques
- Tunnel boring machine
- Maintenance techniques

For planning of a new highway, the constructions of highway bridges are also
important. Therefore, you need to discuss:

- Typical types of highway bridges used

- Construction of abutments

Unit 42 HE A1 July 2020 CDC 5

- Active and passive control systems
After that, to fulfill the requirements of the planning, you have to discuss the
interrelationship between the earthwork operations, bridges and the tunnelling of a
new highway.

In the final stage, you have to analyses design details for the earthwork operations,
bridges and tunnelling of a new highway.

All documents should contain diagrams to illustrate the content.
