IV Name IV Date
Submission Format:
Students will submit two assignments in the form of report for a new highway project. The
submission format of the report should be written in the form of formal academic writing styles
and should include:
- Title page
- Table of contents
- Introduction
- Case study parts and
- References
In report writing, the information should be clearly presented. All documents should contain
diagrams to illustrate the content and the related citation should be included. The
recommended word limitation is 3000 words from introduction to referencing parts but 15% up
or down is acceptable.
Student declaration
I certify that the work submitted for this assignment is my own. I have clearly referenced
any sources used in the work. I understand that false declaration is a form of malpractice.

Scenario
A highway is the main public road that connects different cities, towns and villages
together. It is a major and significant public road that is able and fit to carry fairly
heavy traffic. With the help of good transportation systems, not only public were able
to communicate safety and comfortably without having to spend much of their
precious time on travelling but also it can lead to a better flow of goods which plays
the main role for the development of economic and the environment where we all live.
Obviously, it is vital to have good quality highway system especially for developing
countries to transform into the sophisticated society. Myanmar is the developing
country and for those reasons, the government enforced the Ministry of Construction
to construct the new Mandalay-Naypyidaw highway road which will create more
proactive in developing innovative highway solutions. You are a road construction
engineer of Ministry of Construction and your project teams have to construct a new
route for a highway in order to produce more creative and resourceful solutions for
the future. Therefore, your project team is responsible to analyze to prepare the
project report. Your report should be two parts.
According to scenario, for developing a new highway route, firstly you have to analyse
how the route of a new section of highway is identified and planned by highlighting
the required legal procedures. In this you have been follow the instructions below:
- Selection of highway alignment
- Land acquisition processes
- Environmental impact assessment
For geometric design purpose, you have to analyze daily traffic data for determining
the current traffic on a section of highway project. Therefore, solve the following
problem:
(b) Sketch the longitudinal profile, cross-section and show the stationing of the key
points along the road-way for the following conditions.
- Degree of curvature, D = 8˚
- Design speed = 40mph
- Width of pavement = 36 ft
- Amount of normal crown = 3 in
1
- Allowable maximum rate of superelevation =
15
- Maximum superelevation runoff = 1:200
- Normal crown ends at station = 20+00
Assume that the side friction is neglected and superelevation is obtained by
revolving the road surface about the center line or crown.
During working the earthwork operations for a major new highway in difficult terrain,
you met with the different grading conditions to obtain smoothing alignment.
Therefore, you need to draw the types of summit curves and valley curves for various
condition of grade. And then, the following criteria are needed to be considered in
your earthwork operation process:
- Geotechnical investigation
- Soil stabilisation techniques
- Formation of embankments and cause of failures
And then, you have to need forming of a tunnel section on the proposed new highway.
Therefore, you should prepare an outlines of design and method statements for the
forming of a tunnel section. It should include:
For planning of a new highway, the constructions of highway bridges are also
important. Therefore, you need to discuss:
In the final stage, you have to analyses design details for the earthwork operations,
bridges and tunnelling of a new highway.

checklist
1. The assignment should have a cover page that includes the assignment title,
assignment number, course title, module title, Lecturer/tutor name and
student’s name. Attach all the pages of assignment brief/achievement summary
with your report and leave them blank for official use.
2. Ensure that authenticity declaration has been signed.
3. This is an individual assignment.
4. Content sheet with a list of all headings and page numbers.
5. A fully typed up professionally presented report document. Use 12 point Arial or
Times New Roman script.
6. Your assignment should be word-processed and should not exceed from 3,000–
5,000 words in length.
7. Use the Harvard referencing system.
8. Exhibits/appendices are outside this limit.
9. The assignment should contain a list of any references used in the report.
Check carefully the submission date and the instructions given with the
assignment. Late assignments may not be accepted.
Ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the assignment by the
due date.
Do not leave things such as printing to the last minute – excuses of this nature
will not be accepted for failure to hand-in the work on time.
You must take responsibility for managing your own time effectively.
If you are unable to hand in your assignment on time and have valid reasons
such as illness, you may apply (in writing) for an extension.
Failure to achieve a PASS grade will results in a REFERRAL grade being given.
Take great care that if you use other people’s work or ideas in your assignment,
you properly reference them in your text and any bibliography.
