PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT REPORT;

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

Tool can be defined as a hardware necessary to produce any article in large

quantity, it can be a jig or a fixture used for rapid machining of parts. A Press tool
used to produce identical component with the same accuracy to the entire
component.

Press working is one of the most advanced and extensively used methods of
metal working. It is efficient, less labor – consuming while offering a sparing use of
materials and yielding adequately accurate products. In most cases press working is
the final operation requiring no further machining.

Press working equipments includes different presses and tools known as dies
or press tools. All the press working operations can be classified as cutting and non-
cutting

Since this project is based on both cutting and non- cutting operations it is
necessary to have knowledge of the reactions of stock material due to the operations.

Progressive tools are the tools in which there are two or more stations are
required for the component is performed stage wise. Progressive tool is more
expensive than any other tool. Progressive tool are preferred for the quality of the
component and mass production.

INTRODUCTION TO PRESS TOOLS

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

Press tool is a device used to produce similar type of components with

desired Shape and size in large volume by appling the external force.

The press tool consists of two main halves. Top half & bottom half. Die
member will be the bottom half and punch member will be in the top half.

Die contours are made according to the shape of the component required.
Die will be a female member and punch will be a male member. These two halves
are aligned and pressed under force. Press working forces are setup, Guided &
controlled in machine referred as “PRESS”.

There are SIX types of press tools

 Simple tool
 Progressive tool
 Compound tool
 Combination tool
 Rubber tool
 Dinking
SIMPLE TOOL:

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

In Simple Tool only one operation is performed at each stroke of the press in
a single station. In this tool there is no stage therefore only end stopper is fitted for
locating the strip of metal.

PROGRESSIVE TOOL:

In a Progressive Tool two or more operation is performed. Simultaneously at

a single stroke of the press by mounting the separate set of die and punches at two
or more different station. The strip of metal is progressed from one station to other
station till the complete part is obtained

COMPOUND TOOL:

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

Compound Tool is quite different from a progressive tool. In Compound

Tool two or more cutting operations are performed during one stroke of the press
at one station of a tool only.

COMBINATION TOOL:

In a Combination Tool both cutting and non cutting operations are performed at
one station of the tool in every stroke of the press.

RUBBER TOOL:

In this tool blanking or forming operations employs a Rubber pad in the

punch holder and punch in the die block. It operates on the principle of that when
the Rubber is compressed it transmits the pressure in all the direction the Rubber
tends to flow in a cavity in order to exert full force against the part or the
component. This type of blanking or forming is called Guerin Process.

DINKING TOOL:

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

To cut paper, leather, cloth, rubber and other soft materials a dinking tool is
used. The cutting edges penetrate the material and cut it. The dinking punch digs
into the base plate. The base plate may be made of wood, rubber or sometime
plastic material.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF OPERATIONS IN PRESS TOOLS:

In addition to piercing & blanking, various other shearing & non-shearing

operations can be carried out in press tools. They are

PRESS TOOLS CLASSIFIED

ADVANTAGES

1. Accuracy related to dimensions is consistent

process the sheet metal to achieve the final finished component

SHEARING OPERATION PRESS TOOLS

BLANKING

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

It is a process of producing a flat piece part from sheet metal. In this process
entire periphery is cut & the cut piece is called “BLANK”. When all the operations
are accomplished and if the piece part is ready for assembly, then it is called
“COMPONENT”. The piece part that is removed from the strip is always the work
piece and the remaining strip is called “SKELETON” this operation is called
“BLANKING”.

NOTCHING

This operation removes small amount of material from either or both edges of
the strip or blank. Notching serve to shape the cut contours of the work piece in a
progressive die or to remove excess material before a drawing or forming
operation in a progressive die. The removal of excess material allows the metal to
flow or form without the interference of the excess material on the sides

TRIMMING

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

It is also a secondary operation, which imparts a certain shape to the component

or side of the strip. Trimming may also be used to remove the excess metal, which
remains after deep drawing operation or die casting. This operation provide a
smooth edge and the outer contour will be neat.

CUT-OFF

It is the process of separating the piece part from the parent material. Hence the
material is cut in a straight line. No scrap is produced in cutting off operation. Cut-
off is also used to chop off the scrap strip skeleton as it leaves the die. This makes
the scrap much easier to handle and transport.

CAM PIERECING

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

Piercing a number of holes simultaneously around the shell is done in a side

cam die. Side cam converts the up and down motion of a press ram into horizontal
motion or angular motion when it is required in the nature of the work.

DINKING

This operation is performed on non-metal sheets which do not require a

die. The cutting edge of the punch will be like a knife and when the operation
is done, placing the sheet on a wooden plank or soft plate the punch penetrates
into the material and the component will cling into the opening made in the
punch. This component is ejected by spring loaded shedder mounted in the
punch opening.

NON-SHEARING OPERATION PRESS TOOLS

BENDING
Bending is shaping the material around a straight axis, This extends
completely across the material. One or more bends may be involved in bend
dies. These dies are important class of press tools. The sheet material flow in
these tools is always uniform and its thickness remains unchanged
FORMING

The operation
of forming is
similar to
bending except
that the line of

GT&TC SHIVAMOGGA

Govt. Tool Room & Training centre, ShivamoggaPage 2

SHIVAMOGGA
PROJECT REPORT 2019-20

bend is along the curved axis instead of a straight one. The metal flow is not uniform.
