Shelby R.

Carter
885 Mount Loretta Avenue Dubuque, Iowa 52003 | 815-847-0968 | scarter1196@yahoo.com

Who I am
· My name is Shelby Carter, and I am originally from Rockford, Illinois. There, I lived with my mom, dad, and little sister,
Paige. I graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa with a double major in history and secondary education. I am
currently in my first year of teaching at Washington Middle School in Dubuque, Iowa. I teach 6th grade social studies.

Education
HIGH SCHOOL | MAY 2015 | BOYLAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
· My high school experience prepared me well for college. At Boylan I took many honors classes and participated in many
organizations. These organizations include German Club, Key Club, and Senior Retreat Team. I also was the president of
the National Honors Society. Lastly, I was a three sport athlete as well as captains of those teams.

COLLEGE | MAY 2019 | LORAS COLLEGE

· Loras College prepared me well for my career in the classroom. I was able to work in many diverse schools, such as
private and public schools and elementary, middle, and high schools. I completed the education program successfully,
was the president of a campus organization, as well as working at a daycare and leading an after school program.

Skills & Abilities

MANAGEMENT
· I am a very organized and structured individual. I utilize my outlook calendar, phone calendar, and planner. With this
planning and structure, I am aware that flexibility is equally important. For example, in college I would plan events in
preparation for any problem or outcome. In the classroom, I always have backup plans and extra activities prepared. I
have a plan for any bump in the road, and I am ready to take action if and when those happen.

COMMUNICATION
· Communication is one of my most prominent characteristics. I am constantly emailing those I am working with and
making calls to update others on any information gained. By proactively communicating with all those involved, I am
able to better delegate issues to members as seen fit. Teaching has taught me that communication comes both
nonverbally and verbally. I have mastered proximity to decrease behavior as well as nonverbal cues for students in the
classroom.

LEADERSHIP
· My management and communication skills are two strong characteristics that lead to, what I consider, my strongest
quality. I am a leader. I was captain of numerous sports teams, president of National Honors Society, and president of a
campus organization. I am also a coach at school. I am not afraid to talk in front of large crowds, to take control of
situations or activities, or to go out of my way to help or talk to others. I am social, personable, and outgoing.

Experience
6TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER |GEORGE WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL | 2019-CURRENT
· I am currently an educator in Dubuque, Iowa. I use the state standards to structure each day’s lessons. Our 6th grade
curriculum is World Religions and Cultures. As well as teaching, I coached 7th grade girls basketball. I am also in charge
of our 6th grade social media accounts.
SITE LEAD | ST. MARK’S YOUTH ENRICHMENT | 2016 - 2019
· In the fall of 2016 I was able to work at morning and afternoon program at Lincoln Elementary. After that semester I
was able to work in Audubon and Marshall Elementary. In 2018, I was promoted to Site Lead at Lincoln Elementary.
This meant I was in charge of making lesson plans for the program as well as communicating with my supervisors and
parents.

LEAD STAFF | ROCKFORD PARK DISTRICT | 2014-2019

· The summer going into my junior year of high school the Rockford Park District received a grant that allowed the
organization to hire more teens for summer camps. I was lucky enough to receive employment at Learn to Play Sports
Camp in downtown Rockford. In 2015 I was promoted to Lead in Training. Then, 2016 until 2019 I was acting as lead
staff of the program. At camp I was to make staff schedules, plan the days’ events, work with a community lunch
program, and coach children in numerous sports.

Why me
Loras College has blessed me with a plethora of opportunities that I have never once taken
for granted. As a senior in high school, I had committed to Loras in January. I was one of the
first in my class to make my post high school plans official. I did this because I just knew. I
knew Loras was the college for me, and I knew I would excel here. Unfortunately, I was
hospitalized that summer. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and my symptoms were
so bad that the doctor did not allow me to come to Loras my first semester. This life
changing diagnosis rocked my world. My whole life had to adjust to one of my organs not
working properly. Because of this, I learned the true value of time. Time is something so
special that we literally will never get back. Since then, I have been making the most of my
time, at Loras, at college jobs, and as a teacher. I feel my wide range of experience with
children of all ages, backgrounds, etc. has helped shape me into the teacher I am. I take each
opportunity I am handed and do my best with it. Because of this mentality, I feel I have
excelled at Loras and as a teacher.
