b) At the end of your report, add a new section in which you discuss the importance of
following a procedural/staged lifecycle. You should make reference to the SWC Library
system investigation in your report. Identify several factors that influence the success or
failure of a systems development project.

Introduction

It is very important to follow a procedural/staged lifecycle so that the project under

development will be a success. It is important not to skip any stages or complete the stages
in a different order otherwise time and money will be wasted and the system will not be
developed at all or else developed incorrectly……………etc………………………..

The stages involved in a procedural/staged lifecycle model

In a procedural/staged lifecycle model the steps outlined below should be followed in the
correct sequence…….
1.Feasibility Study Explain briefly that this phase is the first step of any system's life cycle.
 It is during this phase that a need to acquire or significantly
enhance a system is identified, its feasibility and costs are
assessed, and the risks and various project-planning approaches
are defined.
 One of the most time consuming task is to recognize the real
problem of the pre-installed system within the SWC library.
 The system analyst will spend much time trying to understand the
existing system in SWC Library. There are many problems with
SWC library such as………etc.….
 In this stage the analyst makes a survey by the gathering all the
available information needed for the system elements and
allocation of the requirements to the software.
2.Requirements Explain that is important that the analyst fully understands the working of
Analysis the new information and the functions of the software which is required
for a new system.
 The analyst will write a report of the requirements regarding the
system which is to be developed. In SWC Library the new system
will provide better sharing of information, smoother running,
reports …….etc.
3.System Design Explain that during this phase, a preliminary (general) system design,
emphasizing the functional features of the system, is produced.
Then a final (detailed) system design is produced that expands the design
by specifying all the technical detail needed to develop the system.

The analyst makes number of design of the system on the paper or on the
computer and sees the rough image made of the system comprises of the
all requirements or not. Once this is done analyst will select the best
design for SWC Library.
4.System Explain that during this phase, systems are developed or acquired based
Construction on detailed design specifications. The writing of the software is very time
consuming. The system is also tested through a sequence of unit,
integration, performance, system, and acceptance testing. The objective
is to ensure that the system functions as expected and that customers’
requirements are met.
This phase requires strong user participation in order to verify thorough
testing of all requirements and to meet all business needs.

5.System Explain that this is one of the most vital phases as the analyst actually
Implementation gives the system to the customer and expects positive feedback. During
this phase, the new or enhanced system is installed, users are trained,
data is converted (as needed), the system is given to the customer, and
business processes are evaluated.

6.System Explain that this is the last stage of a procedural/staged lifecycle. It is

Maintenance where. The system becomes operational during this phase. The emphasis
during this phase is to ensure that customers’ needs continue to be met
and that the system continues to perform according to specifications.

Routine hardware and software maintenance and upgrades are

performed to ensure effective system operations.

User training continues during this phase, as needed, to acquaint new

users to the system or to introduce new features to current users.

Additional user support is provided, as an ongoing activity, to help resolve

reported problems.

Reasons why a project may fail

If the above phases were not followed in the correct sequence then many problems will
arise.
 The project may not fully meet the original requirements.
 Project may be over budget.
 Project may be behind schedule.
 ……etc.
Factors which influence the success of a project

 A project needs a good project manager overseeing the project to keep it on

schedule and mitigate against any risks of if not going to plan,
 Experienced staff who…
 A schedule…….
 ….etc.

Conclusion
Explain that the development of the any project should be successful provided that the
requirements have been properly understood and that each stage 5of the SDLC model are
followed in the correct sequence….etc.
