INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

During the lesson pupils will:

i) Discuss the story how rain is made.


ii) Identify at least 6 key words from the passage and use in sentences.
iii) Writing the comprehension questions.

MEDIA

Picture of a person running away from the rains, picture of green vegetation, flash cards
with unfamiliar words.

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE

Pupils have seen the rainfall before.

INTRODUCTION

The teacher story tells pupils a story of a herd of cattle that was all killed by lightining during
the rain.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT

Step 1

The teacher will ask two pupils to narrate the story in their own words. As a follow up to the
pupils’ narration, the teacher declares the lesson by telling the pupils that today they are
going to read a passage, ‘The rain charm ’.

Step 2

The teacher shows pupils picture of a person running away from the rains, which pupils
identify and they will relate their different experiences. He will later display a picture of
green vegetation, which the teacher asks pupils to say what causes plants to grow. The
teacher will ask pupils to read the flash cards with unfamiliar words, before explaining and
use them in sentences.

Step 3

The teacher leads the reading of the story and pupils follow taking turns to read. The class
briefly discuss the story.

Step 4

In groups they discuss how the children felt when they saw the thief being beaten by the
crowd after stealing, report back as the teacher monitors.

Step 5

Individual work.

(4) What did he tell his sister to do with the charm?
(5) How can you tell whether Nyakuimba was afraid or not?

flood?

Extension Work

1. Match the following words with meaning


Words: Charm, settle, sniff
Meanings: Breathe in loudly, to stay, a thing which works magic
2. Write two sentences using two verbs from the story.

CONCLUSION
Two pupils will summarise the story.
