GRADE 2

TOPIC: Pronoun.

What is a pronoun?
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.
Examples: he, she, it, they.

LET ME EXPLAIN YOU MORE..

Pronouns are words that can be used to take the place of a noun. There
are different kinds of pronouns, but, in this lesson, we are going to look
specifically at personal pronouns and learn how useful they are in our
everyday speaking and writing.

Don't Be Boring
Sam went home.
Sam ate dinner.
Sam did his homework.
Sam went to bed.
Could you imagine reading an entire story about Sam where every
sentence used his name? Sam seems like a cool kid, but you probably
got bored reading just 4 sentences. It kind of sounds like a robot is
talking...and not an exciting one with laser beam eyes and a jet pack,
just a plain, old, boring robot. Sometimes when we write, it's important
to choose different words so the reader doesn't get bored or sound
like a robot when they read them. Let's see how we can use personal
pronouns to add interest to our writing.

Personal Pronouns
Personal pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. They are
used instead of the names of people, places, or things. Think of it like a
hockey game. When the players on the ice get tired, the coach puts in
new players and gives the tired players a break. Personal pronouns are
just like the substitute players the coach puts in. They are giving a
noun a break from being constantly used in a person's writing.
Not only do personal pronouns help a writer to keep their writing
interesting, but they also give information about the noun they are
replacing to include how many, whether a person is male or female, and
who is writing the sentence.

If you look at the sentences about Sam, the writer could have easily
substituted 'he' for some of the sentences because the personal
pronoun 'he' can be used for a male person.
