OBJECTIVES OF VISIT:
 To understand the basic knowledge about the water resources.
 To get awareness about the structure of barrages and other water
resources.
 To develop our understanding about the fluid pressure and velocity
at the barrage.
 To practically see and observe the water control at barrage i.e.: how
the direction of water is diverted and converted into canals etc. for
irrigation purpose.
 To understand the basic purpose of water resources and their
importance.
 To closely observe all the phenomena of barrage and its functionality
on the river.
 To learn about the silt excavators, their importance and functionality
of silt excavator.
INTRODUCTION OF TAUNSA BARRAGE:
Taunsa Barrage is a barrage on the INDUS River in Taunsa tehsil of Dera
Ghazi KhanDistrict, Punjab province of Pakistan. It is situated 20 kilometres
(12 miles) southeast of Taunsa Sharif and 16 kilometres (9.9 miles)
from Kot Addu. This barrage controls water flow in the River Indus for
irrigation and flood control purposes. Taunsa Barrage was designed on 22
March 1996.

This barrage serves 2.351 million acres (951,400 hectares) of land


besides diverting flows from Indus River to the Chenab
River through Taunsa-Panjnad Link Canal (TP Link Canal). The barrage
also serves as an arterial road bridge, a railway bridge, and crossing for
gas and oil pipelines, telephone line and extra high voltage (EHV)
transmission lines.

Taunsa Barrage has been identified as the barrage with the highest


priority for rehabilitation. It requires urgent measures to avoid severe
economic and social impacts on the lives of millions of poor farmers
through interruption of irrigation on two million acres (8,000 km²) and
drinking water in the rural areas of southern Punjab, benefiting several
million farmers. Taunsa Barrage is one of the most vulnerable water
diversion projects built on Indus River.
This is the view from other side of barrage from where water comes out of barrage.

The canal system fed by the barrage initially consisted of


Muzaffargarh and Dera Ghazi Khan Khan canals. The former was
completed in 1960 and is in operation since then, while the latter although
opened in 1958 continued to remain underconstruction in some later
years.

SILT EXCAVATORS:
These are the excavators constructed at the bank
of canals to prevent the passage of silt with water in rivers and canals and hence
prevent the blockade in the water path. In short they serve as the filters to extract
silt from the water.

OUTCOME OF VISIT:
Students observed and studied the working and purpose of barrage and
learnt how barrages are constructed. We came to know about the advantages
and need of barrages in Pakistan and all over the world to save and utilize the
water in many ways. Construction of different canals is also a major purpose of
barrage construction so that we can change the direction of water and can utilize
it effectively.
We came to know about the different types of functionality of the barrage. The
structure of barrage and design of bank of the rivers and canals was understood
by the students. We also learnt about the pressure diversion and pressure control
of water at the barrage. The purpose of fish ladder provided at the barrage was
observed by the students.
Barrage building has been one of the most disputed topics affecting the
environment today. ... While Barrages destroy the nature and people surrounding
the area in which they are built, they do provide people with water and products
from water.
