    OSCE OF PROCEDURE: NEW BORN CORD CARE

    Purpose:
    ➢ To assess the cord for any abnormality
    ➢ To assess the cord for inflammation or infection
    ➢ To facilitate cord to dry
    ➢ To prevent infection

    Equipment required:
    One tray (medium size), I galipot. I kidney tray, cotton balls, distilled water. Spirit
    swab.

    Steps
    Explain the procedure to mother
    Gathere iquipmnt-all wash-hands

    Set the environment. Expose the umbilical stump and place the baby (preferably a flat
    surface).

    Observe for signs of infection and notify if cord


    Produces a foul-smelling discharge
    Clean the cord with boil water (room temperature)

    Alcohol swab. Clean cord in


    circular motion below the clamp and above the clamp, using one stroke only and
    discard it.
    Use a separate cotton ball' each time. (Twice a ! day) truct mother
    Stump will get dry and fall within 2 weeks (Don't pull the stump even if is attached
    slightly)
