    Remove Timing Gears

    START BY:

    a) remove camshaft

    1. Remove the bolts, plate (1) and gear assembly (2) from the shaft.

    2. Use a press and tool group (A) to remove the bearing from gear assembly (2).

    3. Remove thrust washer (3) from shaft (4).

    4. Remove the bolts and shaft (4) from the engine block.

    5. If removal of the crankshaft gear (5) is necessary, use tooling (B) to remove gear (5) from the
    crankshaft. Removal of the gear is made easier by an increase of the outside diameter of the gear
    with a torch.

    1. Heat gear (1) to a maximum temperature of 233°C (451°F).

    2. Make an alignment of the notch in the gear with the dowel in the crankshaft. Make sure the
    timing mark on gear (1) is toward the outside. Install gear (1) on the crankshaft until it is against
    the shoulder on the crankshaft.

    3. Put shaft (2) in position and install the bolts that hold it to the engine.

    4. Put thrust washer (3) on shaft (2).

    5. Use tooling (A) and a press to push the bearing into the bore in gear (4). The inside diameter of
    the bearing must be 63.602 ± 0.038 mm (2.5040 ± .0015 in.) after installation.

    6. Install gear (4) on the shaft. Make sure the timing mark on gear (4) is in alignment with the
    timing mark on crankshaft gear (6).

    7. Install thrust plate (5) on shaft (2). The groove in plate (5) is toward gear (4) in a vertical
    position.
