Pressure Equipment Directive (Ped) - An Introduction
The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EC is an European Community Directive that deals
with the manufacture and sale of pressure equipment that has a maximum allowable pressure greater
than 0.5 bar gauge. It has been formulated as law with effect from the 29 th May’2002 and compliance
to this directive is now a mandatory requirement for all pressure equipment within the scope of this
directive.
The PED applies to the design, manufacturing and conformity evaluation process of pressure
equipment, as well as pressure equipment assemblies. The maximum allowable pressure must be
greater than 0.5 bars (Gauge Pressure)
According to the directive, pressure equipment is defined as vessel, piping, safety and pressure
accessories. The general term “Pressure Equipment” covers pressure vessels, steam boilers, heat
exchangers, tubing pipe and safety and pressure accessories, as well as devices under pressure. Also
included are all parts and products that are attached to pressurized parts (i.e. flanges, nozzles, lifting
parts, fast-connectors, etc.)
