HSE AWARD CATEGORIES DETAILS

01
CATEGORY 1 - EXCELLENCE IN
WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY
CULTURE
REGISTER NOW
a) Small business (less than 20 employees or full time equivalent)
b) Large business (20 or more employees or full time equivalent)
This Award recognises demonstrated commitment to continuous
improvement of workplace health and safety outcomes through the
creation and continuation of an outstanding work safety culture. An
outstanding safety culture is created through leadership, workforce
engagement and training; and reinforced across the organisation using
the following:

 robust safety systems with cooperation and collaboration at all


stages of the planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting
 demonstrated behaviour and workforce engagement
 evidence of recognition programs, awareness campaigns and risk
management

Excellence in safety culture must be demonstrated at all levels of the


organisation, from senior management’s commitment to health and
safety, to employees’ communication and ownership of responsibility.

Judging criteria

For entry in this category, submissions must show the following:

1. Describe your safety culture and its key components. How long
has it been in place?
2. How do your staff and management demonstrate and take
ownership of your safety culture across the organisation?
3. Has your safety culture been fully integrated into the business? For
example – recognition and awareness programs, senior
management commitment, workforce engagement, design,
purchasing, contract and contractor management, change
management, WHSMS audits, management reviews etc.
4. What are the results? Include performance information such as
injury frequency and severity, claims costs, claims vs industry
performance etc.

If your entry progresses to a site visit, the visiting inspector may request
to:

 interview workers and management about your safety culture


 see evidence of control measures in place
 review claims or incident/injury data for at least the previous 12
months
 see evidence of work health and safety reporting and consultation
 any other evidence to show a strong organisational safety culture.

CATEGORY 2 - BEST SOLUTION TO AN
IDENTIFIED WORKPLACE HEALTH AND
SAFETY ISSUE
REGISTER NOW
a) Small business (less than 20 employees or full time equivalent)
b) Large business (20 or more employees or full time equivalent)
This Award recognises excellence in developing and implementing a
solution to an identified health and safety issue. Entries for this Award
may include a product solution, engineering innovation, a training
program, an awareness raising activity or other risk control measures
that reduce the risk of work-related injury and illness.

Judging criteria

For entry in this category submissions must show the following:

1. What was the health and safety issue at your workplace?


2. What did you do to address/control/resolve it?
3. Who did you talk to about the issue or who helped you resolve it?
4. What was the outcome? In what way is your workplace now safer?

If your entry progresses to site visit, the visiting inspector may request to
see:

 claims or incident data


 evidence of work health and safety reporting and consultation
 evidence of how the level of control was selected.

CATEGORY 3 - BEST INDIVIDUAL
CONTRIBUTION TO WORKPLACE HEALTH
AND SAFETY

This Award recognises individuals who have made an exceptional
difference to work health and safety (WHS) within their workplace.

Judging criteria

For entry in this category submissions must show the following:


1. Describe your health and safety achievements/contributions and
how they were accomplished. Include barriers encountered.
2. In what way was your approach and contribution innovative in
achieving better work health and safety performance?
3. What communication and consultation processes were
required/used to implement your achievements/contributions?
4. How were the improvements in work health and safety
performance measured?

It is desirable to include a letter of reference from your Manager to


support your entry.

If your entry progresses to a site visit, the visiting inspector may request
to see:

 claims and incident/injury data


 other work health and safety reporting information.

CATEGORY 4 - EXCELLENCE IN RECOVERY
AT WORK FOR BUSINESS
REGISTER NOW
This Award recognises an employer’s or organisation’s outstanding
contribution in providing safe and sustainable recovery at work solutions
for injured worker(s).

Judging criteria

For entry in this category submissions must show the following:

1. Your organisation's recovery at work program (system) and why


you think it is excellent.
2. How the program was implemented and integrated in your
organisation.
3. At least one example of how the program enhances return to work
outcomes for injured workers.

If your entry progresses to a site visit, the visiting inspector may request
to see:

 written plans and/or templates


 return to work results
 the monitoring and review process applied to the return to work
program
 referees

CATEGORY 5 - RECOVERY AT WORK
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR INJURED
WORKERS
REGISTER NOW
This Award recognises a worker's outstanding achievements in
recovering following a workplace injury.
Injured workers can nominate themselves in this category or an
employer can nominate an injured worker but must provide the written
consent of the injured worker to do so. If an employer enters an injured
worker, the entry should focus on the achievements of the injured
worker.

Judging criteria

For entry in this category submissions must show the following:


1. What was your job and how were you injured?
2. What is your job now and how did you get there?
3. How did you work with others to help yourself recover at work?
4. What did you do to help yourself recover at work?
5. What do you think helped you most to recover at work?
6. What advice would you give other injured workers?
7. At least three people from the organisation who can act as referees
to your application. You must provide their name, organisation,
position and contact numbers.

to see:

 written plans
 templates
 referees.

CATEGORY 6 - SAFEWORK NSW
LEADERSHIP IN SAFETY AWARD
REGISTER NOW
The SafeWork NSW Leadership in Safety Award recognises all-round
excellence in work health and safety, workers compensation and
recovery at work. 
Entrants must be nominated by a third party to be eligible for this
category. Self-nomination is not permitted.
Do you know of an individual or organisation, large or small, that is
working with others to promote safer workplaces? Who not only
achieves excellent results in their own workplaces but in their industry,
local area or across the state? If you do, nominate them for this Award
so their contribution to keeping NSW workers healthy and safe can be
applauded.

Judging criteria

To enter this category the nomination needs to address following criteria.

1. What is the nominee's role and how do they show leadership in


work health and safety, recovery at work and injury management.
2. Give examples of their leadership activities within their organisation
and externally such as across industry.
3. What are the nominee's greatest work health and safety, recovery
at work and injury management achievements.
4. How does the nominee go above and beyond what is expected in
work health and safety, recovery at work and injury management
and what makes them outstanding.
5. Give examples of how the nominee works in partnership with other
organisations to achieve excellence in work health and safety,
recovery at work and injury management.

If the entry progresses to site visit, an inspector will attend the nominee's
place of business and will look at how the nominee:

 has inspired, shared and developed a vision for the future of the
organisation
 displays exceptional leadership practice/s and/or contribution over
and above normal legislative requirements
 encourages and develops leadership amongst staff and colleagues
 generates new and better ways to solve workplace safety issues
 develops new initiatives that add to the success of the business
 demonstrates best practice
 guards the health and safety of workers
 demonstrates a positive influence on others
 uses effective consultation processes
 any other evidence that supports the entry.
