    PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a laboratory technique used to amplify a single or few copies of a piece of DNA across several orders of magnitude, generating thousands to millions of copies of a particular DNA sequence. It uses thermal cycling, consisting of cycles of repeated heating and cooling of the DNA melting and annealing of primers to the DNA followed by primer extension with DNA polymerase. This allows the exponential amplification of the target DNA sequence. Some applications of PCR include DNA fingerprinting, diagnostics of genetic diseases, clone DNA for sequencing or expression of genes.
