Solution:

Averroes divided soul into five categories.

1. Nutritive
2. Sensitive
3. Imaginative
4. Cognitive
5. Appetitive

The detail of each category is as below:

1. Nutritive

This part of the soul is responsible for growth and development. To convert nutrients from
potentiality to actuality, the nutritive category/ faculty uses natural heat. These nutrients are essential
for basic survival, growth and reproduction of all living organisms.

For example, childhood is a critical time in the growth and development of a person. Hence being
the key stage in the formation of person’s physical and mental abilities. Considerable scientific
factors such as quantity, quality, timing and nutrient components of every meal determines a child’s
best dietary requirements, enhancing and assisting his growth and development. The stages of
growth range from pre-birth to post birth. Post birth has a span over three age periods; Infancy,
childhood and adolescence. Infancy is the first year of a person’s life. Childhood extends from
infancy to around ten years of age. Whereas adolescence range is from ten to eighteen years of age.

2. Sensitive

Sensitive part of the soul is responsible for emotions and feelings. The sensitive soul is flaccid,
related to sensible forms and dependent upon the living being’s physical senses e.g. the touch, vision
and taste. Our sensitive skills operate in the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual context.
Feelings and emotions can be experienced in many forms, i.e. the sensitive faculty of soul enables
living beings to get acquainted and develop likings or deviations from certain feelings and emotions,
mainly; fear, sadness, joy, trust and anger. Hence, becoming aware of threats, be passionate,
distrust, show hatred or feel unhappy. Similarly, people who are highly sensitive often feel too much
and tend to think too deep. This heightened sensitivity can be better defined as acute mental,
physical and emotional responses resulting from social and environmental or internal stimuli.

3. Imaginative

“Imaginative people are creative”, meaning, to be imaginative is to use one’s imagination. This
Faculty of imaginative soul deals with thinking process in living beings. The ability to stimulate and
produce novel objects and ideas without any immediate input of the senses. It is also the formation
of experiences in the mind, of both good and bad memories. To some intellectuals, imagination is
the power or capacity to form internal images or ideas of objects and situations that are absent to the
senses, the naked eye but visible to the imaginative
eye, i.e. the mind. Whilst the imaginative tends more towards the relation or concerns with
exercising the imagination, as a mental capacity.

4. Cognitive

Cognitive part of soul deals with association of ideas, the process of solving problems and
acquiring knowledge through experiences, thoughts and sensory input. Ideas come from
imaginative part of the soul, interpreted by cognition. Which, when a person utilizes, integrates to
create an understanding by various inputs. Cognitive soul is concerned with mental processes
involved in making sense of our surroundings; the environment and helps to comprehend appropriate
ideas and actions. These cognitive processes include, memory, learning, attention, language,
problem solving, reasoning and analytical thinking. Modern day cognitive psychology aims to
apprehend human cognition by observation of human behavior whilst performing various cognitive
tasks. Being a vast field of study, this part of soul not only aims to study the behavior, but includes
brain activity and structure as well.

5. Appetitive

According to Averroes, the appetitive soul is responsible for body needs such as hunger and thirst
etc. A remarkable earlier philosopher presented the theory of appetitive soul as the part of soul by
which we fulfil our hunger not only for libidinous desires, but for money, fame, food and other
general desires that are in contrast with the cognitive soul. Hence, suggesting that appetitive soul is
in fact labelled as a logical. Furthermore, this part of soul was also identified as pleasure, involved in
human reproduction. The theoretical constructs of structural model of psyche in modern psychology
by a known psychologist, describes this appetitive soul as a psychological concept of ID, which is a
set of uncoordinated instinctual desires that need fulfilment however the circumstances may
be. Therefore, the appetitive soul acts according to pleasure principle the psychic force that
motivates to seek immediate gratification of any impulse regarding bodily needs
