Next Planned Update: 1 October 2008 High Resistance Grounding Systems

1 Scope

This specification defines the mandatory requirements for design, fabrication, and
testing of a high resistance grounding system for indoor installation in non-hazardous
locations.

This specification can be used as follows:

a) With Process Industry Practices ELSGS01 for specifying high resistance
grounding systems for use on new or existing wye-connected 480 V power
systems.
b) With Process Industries Practices ELSGS02 for specifying high resistance
grounding systems for use on existing delta connected 480 V power systems.

Process Industry Practices ELSGS01 is a part of this specification when the data sheet
indicates purchase of a high resistance grounding system for a wye-connected 480 V
power system. Process Industry Practices ELSGS02 is part of this specification when
the data sheet indicated purchase of a high resistance grounding system for a delta-
connected 480 V power system.

If specified, the high resistance grounding system may be integrated into a Motor
Control Center or low voltage switchgear lineup. In this case this specification shall
accompany the low voltage controlgear specification or the low voltage switchgear
specification.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

2.1 If there are any conflicts between this Specification and associated purchasing,
project or engineering documents, this specification shall take precedence.

2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this Specification in writing to the Company
or Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company waiver procedure.

2.3 The designation "Commentary" is used to label a sub-paragraph that contains

comments that are explanatory or advisory. These comments are not mandatory,
except to the extent that they explain mandatory requirements contained in this
SAMSS.

The following is a summary of all the documents which have been mentioned within
this Specification. The specific part(s) of these documents which are applicable have
been identified throughout this Specification.

and below)

4 Qualification

4.1 At least 10 similar high resistance grounding units designed for operation at
600 V or less must have been manufactured at the proposed location of
manufacture and these units must have satisfactorily operated for at least
2 years.

4.2 Evidence that the requirement in 4.1 has been met shall be furnished with the
vendor's proposal.

5 Modifications to Industry Standard

The following paragraph numbers refer to PIP ELSGS01 or PIP ELSGS02which is a

part of this specification. The text in each paragraph is an addition, modification,
exception, or deletion to the requirements of ELSGS01 or ELSGS02. Except as noted
the modifications apply to both PIP specifications.

3.2 (Deletion) Delete entire paragraph.

3.3 (Addition) Saudi Aramco data sheet will be used rather than the PIP data
sheet.

4.1.5 (Deletion applying to ELSG02 only): Delete phrase "of 5 amperes" in first
sentence.

4.2.1(b) (Exception): For indoor applications in an air-conditioned environment, the

system shall be designed for a maximum ambient of 40ºC and a minimum
ambient of 0ºC. For indoor applications in an non-air-conditioned
environment, the system shall be designed for a maximum ambient or 50ºC
and a minimum ambient of 0ºC.

4.2.2 (Addition): The grounding system shall be designed for and located in an
indoor, non-classified location. Operation outdoors or in a classified
(hazardous) location is not permitted.

4.4.1(g) (Exception applying to ELSGS01): A white light shall be used to indicate

control power available.

4.4.1(h) (Exception applying to ELSGS02): A white light shall be used to indicate

control power available.

4.4.1(p) (Deletion applying to ELSGS02 only): Delete entire subparagraph.

4.4.1(l) (Addition to ELSGS01): The pulse current shall be 5 to 7 amperes greater

than the ground fault current.

4.4.1(m) (Addition to ELSGS02): The pulse current shall be 5 to 7 amperes greater

than the ground fault current.

4.6.2 (Deletion to ELSGS02 only): Delete Phrase "and 7 amperes for fault
detection".

4.8.1.4 (Addition): All additional relay contacts for external buyer connection shall
be wired to a dedicated terminal block(s) that are separate from terminal
block(s) provided for power and transformer neutral connections.

4.8.1.8 (Revision to ELSG01 only): Revise to read: "Wiring to the resistors shall
be rated for high temperature or shall be protected with high-temperature,
heat-shrink tape within 6 inches of the resistor terminals."

4.8.2.6 (Addition to ELSG01 only): A separate suitable marked terminal strip shall
be provided for all resistor taps and to allow changing of taps from the front.
An engraved nameplate indicating various tap connections shall be provided
near this terminal strip.

4.8.3.1 (Addition): Wire labels shall be embossed, slip-on or heat-shrinkable type.

Wrap-around, rigid snap-on, or adhesive type markers are not permitted.
