ISBN-13: 978-1-63057-240-2 ISBN-10: 1-63057-240-3
Course Description:
A beginning lab course in Engineering Drawing, including standard drawing practices, sectional and auxiliary views,
and basic dimensioning, computer aided drafting (CAD) and 3-D parametric solid modeling using Solidworks. The
goal of the combined course is to improve visualization of three dimensional simulations for design and problem
solving.
Learning Outcomes:
A student successfully completing this course will be able to:
Use the basic features of a professional-grade Computer Aided Design (CAD) software package to
design real items.
Understand the concepts and develop the skills to use software based on parametric, solid modeling.
Communicate using visual images.
Visualize and sketch three-dimensional objects in two dimensions using various projections and views.
Read and interpret engineering drawings.
Class Calendar:
Dates of exams and homework assignments will be announced in class. It is your responsibility to keep track of
these dates. We will not have class on the following dates:
January 20th (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), February 17th (President’s Day)
Recommended Materials List: *minimum required
0.5 mm Mechanical Pencil* Circle Template
0.7 mm Mechanical Pencil* Isometric Ellipse Template
0.5 mm HB Lead* French Curve
0.7 mm HB Lead* 45-45-90 Triangle*
Ruler* 30-60-90 Triangle*
White Hi-Polymer eraser* Compass
Engineering Scale Protractor
Grading:
Assignments: Drawings or sketches will typically be assigned Monday and collected the following Monday.
Solidworks assignments will be assigned weekly. Assignments will be graded on the basis of neatness and
technical correctness, and on time of completion. These assignments will be:
Sketching Homework 30% of Final Grade
SW Homework 45% of Final Grade
Final Project: There will be one final project, worth 20% of your final grade.
Attendance/Participation:
You will be given a participation/improvement/attitude grade worth 5% of your final grade. It should be an easy 5%
to get. Attendance is expected. Take appropriate steps to make sure you are here on time every day with your
book. If you miss class or know you will miss class, please contact me in person or via email as soon as possible to
discuss the matter. Absences must be for a valid reason that I will determine on a case by case basis. If I find your
reason for missing class inappropriate, then each absence will lower your final grade for the quarter by missing
lectures or in-class assignments. A large number of absences may result in you failing the class.
Syllabus Disclaimer:
This syllabus is a contract between myself, the instructor, and the students registered in this class. At any point
during the quarter items within this syllabus may change. I will provide ample and repeated notices, should such
changes be necessary.
Academic Dishonesty:
Plagiarism, cheating, paper re-use and other forms of academic dishonesty are unacceptable at Highline College
and may result in zero grades and/or disciplinary action.
Additional information on the Highline College academic dishonesty policy is available on the State’s student rights
and responsibilities website: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=132I-120-100
ADA Statement
If you have a health condition or disability that may require accommodations in order to fully participate in this class,
or if you have medical information that needs to be shared with me in the event that the building needs to be
evacuated, please contact me outside of class or contact Access Services in Building 99-180, either by phone at
(206) 592-3857, or email access@highline.edu
If you use an alternative medium for communicating, please let me know before the meeting so that appropriate
accommodations can be made. Information about a disability will be regarded as confidential.
Faculty Advising
Highline College instructors are a wonderful resource for students at any stage of the academic process. Many
Highline faculty have career experience, are knowledgeable about campus resources, and can assist students in
reaching their educational goals through degree planning. If you have an advising question, feel free to approach
your instructor. If your instructor cannot answer your question, she/he will help you find someone who can.
You can make an appointment with me by contacting me through email, or by using this website:

Withdrawals
Students who have not officially withdrawn from the class by the official withdrawal date will receive a grade based
on the work they have completed to that date, even if they have stopped attending class. Be aware that, if you stop
coming to class and do not withdraw, you are likely to earn a 0.0 in the class, which will remain permanently on
your transcript. It is very hard for your grade point average to recover from such a grade. I cannot withdraw you
after that date. See https://classes.highline.edu for dates each quarter.
Writing Center
Peer Writing Consultants (successful students who receive training and certification) are available to help you
understand assignments, brainstorm ideas, and learn to develop, focus, organize, and edit your writing. Stop by or
call to make an appointment. Consider making weekly visits to boost success in your writing. Building 26, Suite
319. Ext. 4364. http://writingcenter.highline.edu
