    Squid isn’t the only one running for president these days.
    Use this kit to teach kids about the electoral process and what
    makes a great president! Activities can be done in small groups
    or by individuals.

    STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR CANDIDATE!


    Your candidate can be anyone; someone silly like a classroom pet, someone serious like a person from history, or some-
    one made up like a character from a book or on tv! TEACHING TIP: There are many great videos and resources online
    about the presidential election process. Find one appropriate for your students to explain the many steps it takes to elect
    a president.

    STEP 2: CHOOSE FIVE REASONS WHY YOUR CANDIDATE SHOULD BE PRESIDENT


    It’s important that voters believe in your candidate, so here’s your chance to convince them. What are the best things
    about your candidate? What will they do once they became president? Why do you like them? TEACHING TIP:
    Connect back to the text! What reasons did Squid give for being a good candidate?

    STEP 3: CHOOSE YOUR CAMPAIGN COLORS


    Everyone knows that branding is very important when it comes to being president. Most candidates in America use red,
    white, and blue in their campaigns. What colors do you think your candidate should have? Color in the President Squid
    hat and bowtie, glue them to popsicle sticks and use as photo props.

    STEP 4: DESIGN PRESIDENTIAL LOGO STICKERS


    Get creative! Create stickers to hand out to supporters. Use the sticker template in this activity kit for inspiration.
    TEACHING TIP: Search online for historic presidential slogans to inspire the students. Have them create their own
    unforgettable presidential slogans that capture the spirit of their candidate.

    STEP 5: HAVE AN ELECTION!


    Invite parents and friends to take part in a mock election. Each group/individual will present their candidate by stating
    the reasons their candidate should be president and handing out campaign stickers. After each group has presented,
    take votes by show of hands (or for extra fun, create voting booths) and find your next president! Attendees can take
    photos with their colored-in President Squid top hat and bowtie photo props.
