Introduction
1.1 Back ground information of school
Thai Binh Duong English School, where I have been teaching English,
offers a wide range of courses from Elementary to Advanced Levels. The
school aims at helping students to develop English skills in Reading, Writing,
Listening, Speaking and pronunciation.
There are fifteen students between the ages of 16-36 (four high school
students, six university students, three secretaries, one businessman, and one
teacher of Math). The high school students want both to develop and extend
their English, and consolidate what they have already studied at the school. The
university students want to improve their English, especially listening and
speaking skills, to be able to find a good job when they graduate from their
universities. Five graduates (three secretaries, one teacher of Math, and one
businessman) want to improve their knowledge of English to satisfy their
business and professional requirements for working more effectively.
The class takes place from 7:15- 8:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays.
This course covers 7 units in 14 weeks.
The designated book, Lifelines, by Tom Hutchinson is a three-level
course at elementary, pre-intermediate, and intermediate level. Each unit of
Lifelines Intermediate Student’s Book contains a basic core of material that
focuses on a particular area of Grammar and Vocabulary, with Reading,
Listening and Speaking, and pronunciation sections. In addition each unit has
an Extension section that provides further skills-based practice which recycles
the language of the core material.

READING PASSAGE 1
Questions 1 to 10 are based on the following passage:
BERNADETTE
The young star of the musical “Bernadette” put on a brave smile yesterday,
her last day as a star in London’s West End. Sixteen-year-old Natalie Wright said,
“I’m terribly sad that the show has closed after only three weeks. But last night I
told myself to just go out and enjoy the final performance.”
Although there were some tears at the theatre last night, Natalie knows she
is on the way to being a star. Reviewers didn’t like the show but they had only
good things to say about Natalie’s performance.
Yesterday Natalie talked to fans, signed autographs outside the stage door
and then joined the other actors for the last performance of the show. Natalie’s
mother who was in the audience last night, said the family always knew that
Natalie would be a success, right from her first appearance on stage at the age of
five. Natalie’s mother has stayed in London with her daughter during the last three
8
weeks. She said she was looking forward to going home but would be back when
Natalie was offered the next part.

needs. You find out you need more vegetables and less fat. Your food-preparation
machine makes you a salad.
After lunch, you go down the hall to your home office. Here you have
everything you need for doing your work. Thanks to your information screen and
your new computer, you almost never go into the office anymore.
The information screen shows an urgent message from a co-worker in

4. Justification on the use and selection of all the materials and
situations used in the test
I selected passage 1 from the textbook collection resource of Vietnam
National University of Technology, and passage 2 from the book New Interchange
by Jack C. Richards. I decided to choose these passages as the test materials
because I found they resemble closely the teaching material of the course in term
of the type of text, level of difficulty, content, domain.
Besides, when teaching students Unit 7 in this course I have observed that
students were very interested in studying about the area of entertainment,
especially about famous stars. They were eager to discuss together about Gloria
Estefan and Elvis Aaron Presley. In addition, predicting about the future of the
world is also an interesting topic that I taught them in unit 3. They seemed to be
very excited about imagining what would happen in the future. Therefore, I think
that passage 1 which is about a famous star, Natalie, and passage 2 which is
about the future high-tech changes will match students’ interests and their previous
knowledge.
I also decided to choose these two passages as the test materials because
the length of the texts is fairly suitable for a final test of this course. The passage 1
is about 200 words, and passage 2 is about 300 words. They are long enough for
students to read and answer about twenty questions in sixty minutes.
In conclusion, I chose these two texts because the length of the texts is
suitable and the ideas may match my students’ interests. Especially, they are very
similar to what has been taught in the classroom. These two texts are related to
some main points in the course: key vocabulary, grammar rules, and the text type
which I think are important for the test-taker to know. Besides, the language used
in the texts is fairly suitable for students at the intermediate proficiency level. Being
on the right level and covering material that has been discussed in class, these two
texts really help give greater validity to the test.
