THE GLOBAL CITY
Learning Outcomes
At the end of our reporting, listeners should be able to:
1. Explain why globalization is a spatial phenomenon;
2. Identify the attributes of a global city; and
3. Analyze how cities serve as engines of globalization.
GLOBALIZATION a spatial phenomenon

 Globalization is spatial because it occurs in physical spaces. You can see it when foreign
investments and capital move through a city, and when companies build skyscrapers.
As all these events happen, more people are driven out of city centers to make way for
the new developments.
 Globalization is spatial because what makes it move is the fact that it is based in places.
In other words, cities act on globalization and globalization acts on cities. They are the
sites as well as the mediums of globalization.
Facts about the increasing numbers in the urban areas:

 In 1950, it is recorded that 30% of the world lived in urban areas.

 In 2014, it increased to 54%.
 And it is expected that in 2050, it will reach to 66%.
This really emphasized that globalization is connected to the rapidly increasing number of
people in the world.
DEFINING THE GLOBAL CITY
Sociologist Saskia Sassen popularized the term “global city” in the 1990s. Her criteria for what
constitute a global city were primarily economic.
She initially identifies three global cities, namely New York, London, and Tokyo, all of which are
hubs of global finance and capitalism. They are the homes of the world’s top stock exchanges
where investors buy and sell shares in major corporations.
Facts: New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has $19,300 billion value of shares that are traded while
Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) only has shares of $231.3 billion.
Today, global economy has changed significantly. So Sassen’s idea about global city is made into
improvements taking into account the latest development that happened and still happening in
our world. Some commentators expanded the idea of Sassen. They site cities that are now
identified global city not because of its dominant economic power but because of other
attributes. Theses cities are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Sydney,
Melbourne, etc.
Defining global city is quite difficult. So, instead of asking whether or not one city is a global city,
it is better to ask: “In what ways are cities global and to what extend are they global?”
INDICATORS FOR GLOBALITY
Attributes of the global city:
1. ECONOMIC POWER- this is the foremost characteristics of a global city. It largely
determines which cities are global.
Economic opportunities in a global city make it attractive to talents from across the world.
To measure the economic competitiveness of a city, The Economist Intelligence Unit has
added criteria like market size, purchasing power of citizens, size of the middle class, and
potential for growth.
2. Global cities are centers of authority. The cities that house major international
organizations may also be considered centers of political influence. Powerful political
hubs exert influence on their own countries as well as on international affairs.
3. Global cities are centers of higher learning and culture. A city’s intellectual influence is
seen through the influence of its publishing industry.
Another examples of global cities are Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark; Manchester,
England; and Singapore.
Today, global cities become culturally diverse.
