Background:

BBC Media A ction is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance
development worldwide. To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and others to produce
creative programmes and content in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences, and to
strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

In India, BBC Media A ction has been using media and communications to improve health, resilience and rights
since 1999. W e are currently implementing major projects across India to improve urban sanitation outcomes
and understand the digital drivers of women’s economic outcomes.

BBC Media A ction is now embarking on a new project funded by the H&M Foundation, called PRIDE – a
Pathway to Respect, Identity, Dignity and Empowerment, where we will seek to shift the way general
populations in Bengaluru think about where their waste goes, and the role waste pickers play in the circular
economy, ensuring that others do not drown in their own waste. The project will also work to create a sense
of pride for waste pickers, in recognising and celebrating the part they play as critical contributors to both
society and the economy. The PRIDE project sits within a larger C ollective Impact Initiative, where other
partners will seek to address complementary outcomes to collectively improve the lives of waste pickers.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the C ountry Director, the Head of Project, PRIDE, will have overall accountability for managing
and delivering a range of activities within the PRIDE project to agreed strategy, objectives, timelines and
budgets. This will include line management of project staff; ensuring editorial output meets BBC standards and
values; relationship management with internal and external stakeholders and partners. The post-holder will
support teams to make editorial decisions in line with BBC editorial guidelines, will be responsible for financial
and narrative reporting internally and externally, and will liaise regularly with the creative, digital, research and
operations teams.

The Head of Project will be a part of BBC Media A ction India’s leadership team and expected to lead and
contribute to organisation priorities and goals in India, and, where appropriate, elsewhere – and in the
development of new business.

The post may be based either in New Delhi or Bengaluru.

The post holder will be expected to sign the BBC ’s conflict of interest declaration and keep it up to date.
S/he may from time-to-time be asked to take on extra responsibilities by the C ountry Director.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:

W orking to the C ountry Director, the Head of Project, PRIDE, will be responsible for:

Project Management
• O verseeing and managing the project on a day-to-day basis, including ensuring high quality and timely
deliverables, in line with the proposed strategy and targets, throughout the life of the project
• Recruiting and developing multi-disciplinary project staff to ensure strategic, creative and
implementation synergy across activities, and effective line management of key project staff
• Developing and managing effective relationships with the donor, partners and stakeholders, and
work closely with the other C ollective Impact initiative partners at the highest levels
• C ollaborating and engaging proactively with a multi-disciplinary team within BBC Media A ction such
as creative, research, digital and operations to ensure smooth operation and timely execution and
completion of project led activities within budgets and build strong relationships
• Developing, managing and delivering to work plans across all outputs for this project, working
closely with internal and external stakeholders
• Upholding the BBC Editorial G uidelines for all outputs and external communications produced for
the project
• Managing financial accountability, ensuring value for money and effective budget planning and
management
• A ccountability for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting – financial and narrative – at various
levels
• Managing all operational, procurement and legal processes and requirements of the project
• Liaising with various teams at BBC Media A ction, UK
• Managing and overseeing all knowledge management, documentation, dissemination and PR on the
project
• Playing a representational role, both for the project and the organization, internally and externally

Safeguarding
• Support the C D and other senior management team members in the delivery of relevant training
to all staff and freelancers contracted directly by the office
• Factor safeguarding issues into project design and include costs within budgets
• Ensure that relevant safeguarding due diligence is conducted with any local partner organisations
that may be working with vulnerable adults or children as part of the project. W here any risks are
identified, ensure that projects are designed to mitigate these risks
• Report any Safeguarding concerns immediately, either to the C ountry Director, or using the
W histleblowing Policy

Skills, knowledge and experience required:


• Proven experience managing digital communication or marketing campaigns
• A t least three years’ experience at a senior account management level. Demonstrated experience
managing projects in an international development setting
• Experience of stakeholder relationship management at a senior level
• Demonstrated people management skills
• Demonstrated skills in project planning, budget development and management, project work plan
development and management
• Excellent written and oral English communication skills. Kannada-speakers are preferred
• A bility to negotiate tactfully and effectively. Strong interpersonal skills
• A bility to demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation, planning and organisation, and strategic
thinking
• Sound editorial judgement and demonstrated understanding of core BBC values of impartiality,
independence and accuracy
• Strong eye for detail
• Demonstrated commitment to quality assurance processes, including ethics

Relevant Competencies:
