1.0 General Description
Right power take-off is for the following functions: steering, outrigger, level adjustment
system.
The WTEC electronic control system specifies and carries out the shift operations.
1. Position of the gear-shift lever Information about the gear selected by the driver
In addition, the computer (ECU) constantly monitors the engine and turbine speed
as well as the transmission oil temperature in the sump and the hydraulic pressure.
The electronic control system (WTEC) also controls the power take-offs, engine flap brake,
upshift lock, cruise control and Temposet.

3.0 Function of the Transmission
The shifting of the individual gears is controlled automatically by the ECU by combining the
multi-plate clutches. The clutches are controlled hydraulically, the oil being supplied via
pulse-width modulated solenoid valves. This process is in turn controlled by the computer.
Solenoid valves
Normally closed (N/C) solenoids differ in function from normally open (N/O) solenoids.
N/C solenoids are hydraulically open, when they are activated electrically.
N/O solenoids are hydraulically closed, when they are activated electrically.
5
4.0 Control Module with Solenoid Valves
Turbine sensor
6
5.0 Solenoid Valves
Solenoid coil
Outlet to sump
The solenoid valves (N/C and N/O) have been designed in such a way that they cannot be
transposed.
The solenoid valves are inserted into a hydraulic control valve body and are then secured with
a conical retaining pin. To dismantle a solenoid valve the hydraulic valve body has to be
removed from the sump section of the control module.
New seals have to be used when reassembling solenoid valves.
7
6.0 Safety Circuit
The N/O solenoids, N/C solenoids and two hydraulic valves (C1 latch valve and C2 latch
valve) combine to provide a safety circuit, which ensures that in the event of a loss of voltage
during forward travel the vehicle remains ready to move. The transmission therefore remains
in gear or changes to a safer gear hydraulically.
When the engine is stopped in this situation, the transmission hydraulically shifts into
neutral and cannot be put back into gear while there is no voltage.
In any case, the lock-up clutch (converter override clutch) disengages in the event of a
loss of voltage to ensure that the engine does not stall when the vehicle stops.
8
7.0 Speed Sensors
There are 3 speed sensors in the transmission, which inform the control unit of the following:
Engine speed
Turbine speed
The engine speed sensor is located at the front on the right on the converter housing.
The turbine sensor is located in the control valve body (control module)
The sensors are simply pushed into the transmission, fixed using a holding screw and sealed
with an O ring.
No adjustment is required!

10
9.0 Reading the Error Memory
If an error occurs in the electronic control unit and is detected by the computer, an error code
is stored in the computer.
For safety reasons, the error codes must be read when the vehicle is stationary.
The ignition must be switched on!!!
Press both arrow buttons at the same time, twice if the transmission has an oil sensor.
The error code will now be displayed in the first storage location “d1”on the display.
The codes comprise a two-figure main code and a two-digit auxiliary code.
The code is displayed until such time as the next storage location is called up by pressing the
mode button, or the reading of the code is terminated.
Only an active error code will produce a temporary malfunction of the transmission.
Finish reading:
Consult the list of error codes for the error codes (see appendix under section 13)
11
10.0 ECU Control Unit
The control unit is a computer controlled by a microprocessor, which has the shift program
and therefore controls the gear shifts.
The control unit contains an E Prom and can therefore be programmed and parameterised
using a PC.
A read-only memory ensures that the control unit does not lose any information, even if it is
removed from the vehicle. The error codes are also stored.

7.0 Troubleshooting
Notes to troubleshooting on the WTEC II and WTEC III electronic control systems:
Error codes, which are only programmed on the WTEC II or only on the WTEC III are shown
in italics.
If all the measures from the “Troubleshooting” section of the following table have been
carried out and the error has not been found, replace the relevant component. If this
remedies the error, install the original component again for checking purposes. If the error
occurs again, install the new component for good.
If this still does not remedy the defect, install a new ECU. If this remedies the error, install the
original ECU for checking purposes. If the error occurs again, install a new ECU for good.
If this still does not remedy the defect, call ALLISON Service.
