Course Syllabus

Subject: Psych 115


Course Title: Introduction to Counseling Psychology
Credits: 3 units
Semester: 2nd Semester, 2019– 2020
Professor: Irene G. Bustos, Ph.D., RGC, RPm

Course Description:

The course is designed to give the students adequate understanding of the nature, process,
techniques of counseling and to equip them with skills and competencies in conducting
counseling. The course emphasizes understanding of oneself as a person and as a future
counselor as well. It includes the application of counseling principles, skills, strategies and
techniques.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the semester, the students are expected to be able to:
1. Explain the nature of counseling and differentiate it from guidance and
psychotherapy.
2. Describe the characteristics and roles of the effective counselor.
3. Understand the nature, process and stages of the counseling process.
4. Differentiate the various theoretical approaches used in counseling with regards to its
view of human nature, key concepts, techniques, stages, goals , strengths and
weaknesses and application.
5. Demonstrate the counseling skills and strategies learned by conducting group
guidance and counseling simulation.

Course Requirements:

1. Active participation in the discussion/class activities/role playing/counseling simulation


exercises.
2. Comprehensive report on a chosen topic in counseling theories.
3. Assignments, quizzes, projects, reflection/reaction papers.
4. Facilitation of the Student Group Encounter Program (SGEP) for all first year students in
the university.
