Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Rationale

One of the basic commodities of us human beings is food. Food contains

nutrients and minerals that our body needs for it to function normally. Food is very

important that without it, we won't be able to survive.

As modern technology blooms, it also means innovation and that will help the

world with problems that are associated with food like poverty, destruction of crops,

lack of supplies, inflation and inadequate space for Agriculture. The researches sought

to explore alternative solution to these burdens by researching Aeroponics System in

growing crops such as Lettuce, to determine the effects of it, its benefit in our

Agriculture and its advantage to the traditional way of planting. The observation of the

Research might help with the idea of using Aeroponics System in growing crops in our

Agriculture. And it also solves the problem with inadequate space for Agriculture since

the country’s population is growing rapidly prompting the need for more space to

grow vegetation and more food supplies to be produced. And because Aeroponics
System only needs a mist environment in order for the plants to survive, it will help

with the conservation of H2O.

The researches decided to take on this topic because if food is one of the basic

needs and also one of the world's greatest needs, then a lot of attention must be given to

it. Aeroponics might be the solution for the world’s problems regarding lack of food

supply.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to develop new techniques on how to grow crops to improve

production of agricultural products and crops, specifically Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa) using

Aeroponics system.

Specifically, it aimed to find answers to the following:

1. What is the average height of Lettuce grown using Aeroponics?

2. What is the average number of leaves (stalks) of Lettuce grown using

Aeroponics?

3. Is there a significant effect of Aeroponics System in the growth of Lettuce?

Significance of the Study

Farmers- It will give more opportunities to the farmers and will help increase in the

production of crops. And it will make their work easier and more efficient.
Consumers- The effectiveness of the research will lead to a cheaper agricultural

products sold in the market that will help the consumer in their budget allotted for food

or agricultural products.

Producers- The research will help them produce enough crop supply for the consumers.

Students- This research will give them more knowledge and might help them with

future studies.

Future Researchers- It can serve as a basis in their future research topic and will guide

them in their study.

Definition of Terms

Aeroponics- is an indoor gardening practice in which plants are grown and nourished

by suspending their root structures in air and regularly spraying them with a

nutrient and water

solution.(https://www.maximumyield.com/definition/137/aeroponics)

Inadequate- too low in quality or too small in amount; not enough.

Commodities- an article of trade or commerce, especially a product as distinguished

from a service; something of use, advantage, or value.

Consumer- one that utilizes economic goods. (https://www.merriam-

Crop- a cultivated plant that is grown on a large scale commercially, especially a cereal,

fruit, or vegetable. (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/crop)

Agriculture- the science, art, or practice of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and

raising livestock and in varying degrees the preparation and marketing of the

resulting products. (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/agriculture)

Producer- a company, country, or person that makes things, usually for sale, esp. things

made by an industrial process or grown or obtained from the ground.

Mist- a light rain or a collection of very small drops of water in the air that is like a fog.

Height- the distance from the top to the bottom of something, or the quality of being

tall. (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/height)

Scope and Delimitation

The study is limited to the production other kinds of crops because it only

included the production of Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa) through the Aeroponics process. The
study will compare the effectiveness of nutrient-filled water against the water without

nutrients on the growth of Lettuce in terms of height and the number of leaves.
