Globalization is a common thing in this modern world.

People are coming up with different

ideas and cultures which they got from other people, particularly from different country. This
subject became a normal thing to all of us. By discussing this topic, it enters the question “does
globalization increase the cultural homogeneity or does it lead to greater diversity and
heterogeneity?”
Globalization is the process of the world becoming more connected through technology,
trade, economics, politics, and increasingly, every other aspect of people’s lives. It is the reason
why people are having different cultures and perspectives which sometimes lead to inconsistence.
It mixes different beliefs and ideas from a particular place. But there are people who choose to
refuse to adapt things from other people and stick with what they are used to. And this leads to a
greater diversity and heterogeneity.
According to Global Studies: Homogeneity vs. Heterogeneity by Nathan and Jillian of
blogspot.com, although globalization has created an environment that leads itself to cultural
homogenization, it has also made it easier to reject such homogenization. The communication and
transportation advancements that allow for rapid spread of ideas does make easier to imitate other
cultures and this, of course, is seen widely around the world, especially by the emergence of terms
like “westernization,” but these same advancements make it easier to either strengthen a culture
that is already in place or to “create your own culture.”
One example that proves that globalization leads to a greater diversity and heterogeneity is
the music industry. Here in the Philippines, people has their own taste when it comes to music.
And nowadays, people are enjoying Korean pop and Western pop. Like for example in one section,
some students enjoy listening to Korean pop while some like Western better. But in class, there
are still those who prefer listening to Original Pilipino Music (OPM) than foreign ones. This enters
the issue of diversity and heterogeneity. In one room, students have different feels when it comes
to music. Because of technology, foreign music was introduced to our country and some people
started loving it while some chose not to acclimate it.
It was stated in StudyMoose, another internet website, that many types of music are
becoming part of young people preferences and musicians and other artists from all over the world
are becoming recognized internationally.
Another example is Filipinos’ food preferences. Since some Filipinos love watching
foreign dramas and movies, they wanted to try the foods they are seeing inside their screens. Like
for instance sushi and kimchi. Different foreign restaurants were built within the country and
people are going there since Filipinos are known for being sunod sa uso or trendy. But of course,
there are still those people who prefer to eat Filipino street foods and lutong bahay.
These are only examples that prove that globalization leads to a greater diversity and
heterogeneity. There are different cultures that are adapted every day in this world but we cannot
expect everyone to have the same belief and accept it as what majority do.
As Balaji Viswanathan, CEO of Invento Robotics, stated in Quora (an internet wesite) that
we are not getting uni-cultural. We are getting multi-cultural and slowly grasping the diversity of
human culture.
