The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas

Book type: Historical Fiction

Genre: Historical Drama, and
Themes: Warfare, Friendship, Lies and Deceit and Racism
Plot:
The main plot in ‘’The boy in the striped pajamas’’ is about a friendship that is formed
between 2 boys known as Bruno and Shmuel. This friendship is different than other
friendships because they are in 2 different worlds.
Bruno is the son of a Lieutenant Colonel who is in charge of a concentration camp nearby.
He lives in a big house, he has a maid, he has a lot of money and he has 2 very caring
parents.
Shmuel’s situation is totally different than Bruno’s because he doesn’t have much food, his
mother has been taken away to another concentration camp, he wears striped pajamas and
he doesn’t have a good life in general.
Both boys were lonely and wanted to have a friendship despite the circumstances of the
holocaust. Their friendship will lead to something very sad.

Subplots

One of the subplots is about the children that don’t realise that this was a holocaust. You can
see that also in the conservations between Bruno and his sister Gretel that the Jewish
people were the reason why the Germans lost the First World War. Bruno also thought that
the electric fence surrounded by the Jews were used for the animals and for them not to
leave.

Another subplot is about betrayal and forgiveness about the 2 friends. Bruno was at home,
he was just sitting there and doing nothing. He went downstairs and saw Shmuel cleaning
the wine glasses. Bruno was surprised, he didn’t think that Shmuel would come to his house.
Then Bruno saw Shmuel looking directly at the food, so Bruno gave a piece of gingerbread.
While eating, Bruno’s father’s assistant walked by and he saw the Jew eating. He asked if
Shmuel was stealing food, Shmuel said that Bruno gave him a piece, the assistant turned
around and looked at Bruno. ‘’Is that true?’’ he said, “No, I have never seen him in my entire
life!”
Later, Bruno went to the place where they met. Bruno didn’t see him, the next day he didn’t
see him as well. After a few days later he saw him, he looked different. Bruno said that he
was sorry, Shmuel looked at Bruno and then looked down again. Shmuel’s eye was covered
with blood. Shmuel was very sad, they shook hands and played chess.
Characteristics
Bruno:
He is innocent because he does not realize the reality that surrounds him. At first, he
thought that the electric fence surrounded by the Jews were used for the animals not to
leave. The 2 boys didn’t see any differences between them.
Bruno is also childlike because he thought that it was a good idea to change into the
prisoner’s clothes to look for his Shmuel’s father and thought that everything was going to
be okay.
He is caring because Bruno went to Shmuel to give him food and to stop him suffering from
the hunger.

Shmuel:
Shmuel is known as a sad person because his mother and his grandparents got transported
to other camps and he always wanted to have a friend and he used to be lonely as well.
He also used to be lonely because before he met Bruno, he was always sitting in the corner
of the electric fence and doing nothing.
Shmuel was after the betrayal a scared person because he didn’t want to beaten like when
Bruno told that he didn’t give him food.

Mother:
She was strict because he didn’t let Bruno go and ‘’explore’’ that the concentration camp
isn’t a farm where you can play.
She was also known as a caring person because she helped with making food and always
made sure that Bruno will stay in the house or at the backyard. She refuses to speak with
Bruno about the war.
She is persuasive she convinced father to let them move back to Berlin. Sadly, she never saw
Bruno again.
