“Seakeeping of high speed ships with transom stern and the validation method with unsteady waves
around ships”
Abstract
Rankine panel method in the frequency domain is developed and applied to several kinds of ships,
including the high-speed transom stern for the purpose of confirming its efficiency. The Neumann-
Kelvin and Double-body flow formulations are examined as a basis flow. To treat the high-speed vessel
which has a transom, a new boundary condition has been introduced. This condition has been derived
from the experimental observation which confirms that the transom stern part is completely dry at the
high forward speed. Influence of a transom stern is observed in hydrodynamic forces and moments,
ship motions, unsteady waves and added wave resistance. It is concluded that the new transom
boundary condition can capture the hydrodynamics phenomena around the transom, and this can
improve the estimation accuracy of the seakeeping qualities in numerical computation.

A TEACHING PLAN
As a mechanical engineer cum naval architect, I can handle the core subject as follows
(i) Kinematic and dynamics of machinery
(ii) Ocean energy and advance ship hydrodynamics
(iii) Numerical techniques in Ocean hydrodynamics
(iv) Wave simulation and measurement analysis
(v) Energy conservation and audit
Any specialized subject related to hydrodynamics, CFD, energy, optimum design of the
product can be taken by me. If it is a necessary, curriculum can be developed for new
courses from my experience in industry.
Since 1996, I have worked in different kinds of researchers and consultancy projects. I have not
moved to any company just for money alone but to utilize my skill in their business area and
brought the importance of my role wherever I am. After publishing many papers, I realized that
published paper does not support the industry directly, and it needs more effort further to
make it the practical uses. As a next step, I (Project Manager) have developed a commercial
solver called “IRWAVE” with the help of our team members and one software company. I was
happy when this software was released for the internal purpose and felt proud of that
achievement.
In NAPA, I was heading a team to give technical services and in addition to the CFD service for
trim curve generation for the efficient ship operation. That position gave me an opportunity to
do technical services, software improvements and to handle different domains like Cloud,
database and IoT in ClassNK-NAPA GREEN project.
During my industry services, had an opportunity to visit China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil,
Singapore, Malaysia, and France. In the marine industry, India is rich enough to have a longer
coastal length when compared to other countries. One of the shipyards in South Korea, deliver
a vessel in every 5.5 days. That means it can deliver around 66 ships in a year. In India, each ship
construction varies from 3 to 5 years for one vessel. In my opinion, Professor Consultancy
service must have been taken in every stage of shipbuilding/construction to improve the
process which is lacking in India. I can support the ship performance improvement for the
existing and new ship to reduce the operational cost and special consultancy can be offered to
improve the propulsion system for the marine vehicles. If the opportunity is given, I prefer to
introduce Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) design and development, which are
demanded future in the marine industry. I presently started working on AUV and planning to
develop AUV for search, rescue and lifting operation.

A RESEARCH PLAN
In my life, I am proud to claim that worked in a few major projects (Past Projects) as follows.
(i.) Design of sail as an Auxiliary propulsion system for Bulk carriers and General cargo
vessel
(ii.) IRWAVE (Sea-keeping) software
(iii.) Numerical Wave Tank
(iv.) ClassNK-NAPA GREEN
Achievements
i. Hydraulic system was designed with telescopic piston to open and close the SAIL. In
addition to that to change the direction of sail also control system and mechanical
system were designed, and model was prepared. The different sail was tested in IIT
Madras to study the lift and drag and estimated the fuel-saving using SAIL in ships.
ii. Seakeeping solver was developed based Green Function Method, and this package
include ship hull preparation (Pre-processor), set boundary condition to analyze (Solver)
and display them out in the graphical form (Post-processor).
iii. Numerical wave tank was developed to generate a regular and irregular wave which
was validated. Now, this feature is available in commercial CFD solver.
iv. One of the best products and service from NAPA and this project were costing 3 million
Euros, and I am one of the key developers in that package. Hull condition monitoring
and CFD analysis for trim curve generation was my part in that project.
Current Research Projects

(ii.) A Technique to improve the performance of marine vehicles
In summary, I would like to list my future plan of research in the category as a short-term goal
and a long-term goal.
A Short-Term Goal
(i) Design of an efficient propulsion system for AUV
(ii) Design and Fabricate AUV for search and rescue operation in underwater
A Long-Term Goal:
(i) Establish a centre for AUV design and development in India
(ii) Develop a ship's operation performance monitoring packages for commercialization
(iii) Safety device or rescue system for fisher during natural disaster situations.

ROLE IN AND DETAILS OF SPONSORED RESEARCH & CONSULTING PROJECTS.
A. Sponsored Research Projects
1) Project Name: Design of Sail as an Auxiliary propulsion system for bulk carriers
and general cargo vessel
Sponsored by and amount: Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India and
20 lakhs for two years ( 1997 – 1999).
Investigator: Mr. S P Biswas, General Manager, NSDRC, Visakhapatnam
Co-investigator: M. Elangovan (myself), self), Designer, NSDRC, Visakhapatnam
Contribution :(i) Design hydraulic system to control the opening/closing/rotation of
sail with respect to the weather condition. (ii) The Model was prepared for the SAIL,
and it was tested in the Aerospace department; IIT Madras (iii) Model was designed
and fabricated to showcase demo of SAIL operation.
The outcome of the Project: It was concluded that bulk carrier vessel can be fitted
with SAIL, and it can save the fuel from 15 to 20 percent.
B. Sponsored Consultancy Projects
1) Project Name: Development of commercial Seakeeping solver (IRWAVE)
Sponsored by and Cost: Internal Project and executed with the help of Pune based
software company and 11 lakhs for one year.
Investigator: Dr. M. Elangovan, Senior Technical Consultant, IRS, Mumbai
Co-investigator: Mr. Negi, Assistant Surveyor, IRS, Mumbai.
Contribution: (I) Sea-keeping Software functionality architect was given by me as a
project manager (ii) Software was tested and validated to develop a service package
using software to monitor and improve the e performance of ship.
The outcome of the Project: The first commercial solver was ready and started
using internally for all analysis and carry out consultancy project.
