LOGISTICS AND SCM CAREER SKILLS

Important instructions:

1. Class activities: Group presentation, lectures, group preparation discussion for next
week/s topics
2. All groups are supposed to prepare their presentation for each section in ppt files with
the minimum font size of 28. Names of presenters are on top right of slides.
3. There may be one ot two topics each morning/ afternoon.
4. Each group presentation will last for 20 minutes for maximum with the involvement
of all members in that group.
5. There must be examples, illustrations, video clips… in group presentations to make
them more attractive and persuasive. Presentation with theoretical answers alone will not
be accepted.
6. Students are supposed to choose and form the groups by themselves. Each group may
consist of 4 to 5 members. Groups are required to prepare so that they can give
presentation of topic 1 on the first day of the course.

1. Give definitions of logistics and supply chain management (SCM). What is the
difference between logistics and SCM? Choose a company and describe its logistics and
supply chain management activities.

SUPPLY CHAIN PLANNER

1.Responsibilities:

- Be responsible for planning, scheduling and monitoring all MRP (or Material
Requirements Planning) activities in order to assure RM ( Reference Materials)
availability to meet production requirements.

- Work closely with all Plant functions as well as the Logistics company to maximize
efficiency of operations and support the agenda for Supply Chain function.

- Maintain innovation project timelines through procurement, planning and expediting


activities for all new product launches being managed through the facility

- Manage down at risk materials through site transfers, production planning and
coordination with logistics team

- Resolve supply-related delays, obstacles, conflicts and product supply issues

- Maintain optimal quality-approved stock in order to maximize manufacturing up-time


while balancing cash-flow (working capital (inventory management)

- Minimize raw materials costs and execute cost savings projects (productivity focus)

Perform monthly inventory obsolescence review as per guidelines & ensure right
assessment of risk.

- Work with Planners & Scheduler to ensure effective capacity utilization

- Responsible for maintaining and complying with all applicable the company, Federal,
State, and Local regulations and standards.

Company operations.
- Manage and supervise staff tasked with creating material requirement plans and/or
forecasts.

- Measure actual performance against goals on regular basis and present results to senior
management.

A logistics director like you must be able to make sound decisions and do it FAST.
Although there will always be unforeseen circumstances when in the supply chain
industry, being as prepared as possible can help you make better decisions.

- Quick follow-through

One thing you also have to learn as a logistics manager is following up with each
component of the supply chain from the very start to the end. If a problem arises along
the way, take note of this and find possible solutions you can use, just in case it happens
again in the future. Experience can be a very good teacher in the logistics industry.

- Manage successful teams

Being a good logistics director is acknowledging that the success of every aspect of the
supply chain is a group effort. You can be a leader to your team effectively, starting by
allocating tasks wisely, paying attention to the team’s efforts, and learning to commend
good work among your teammates. When it comes to working with other teams or units
in the supply chain, it pays to treat everyone with respect and professionalism.

- Adaptability

No matter how early you finished your planning, prepared all the paperwork, and
finalized all the details of your transactions, unexpected things always seem to find their
way to surface. Problems and last-minute changes are almost totally inevitable in a
logistics manager’s day-to-day life, so always be quick on your feet to welcome change
and make the necessary adjustments.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Supply Chain Analysts are responsible for analyzing the life cycle of how goods are
moved from the planning stages to the end consumer. This includes designing and
making the product (possibly in various locations), distributing it and delivering it to the
final parties. In this role, the person responsible performs the following duties:
1. Analyzing Data
 analyzing a vast amount of data: production schedules and production
reconciliation reports
 reviewing underperform areas in the chain: missed delivery times and routes,
warehouse space constrictions, weather patterns, stocking program limitations, etc.
 use technological tools, such as relational database management systems, to
analyze information in a faster and more efficient manner
2. Suggesting Improvements
 suggest improvements to cut costs and improve the entire process
 during a monthly Sales and Operations Planning planning process, this person will
meet with company executives to make recommendations based on careful
research and predictions.
3. Interacting with others
 collaborate with many colleagues from various departments
 communicate with vendors to address problems, negotiate better deals and form
relationships
 address consumer inquiries, analyze customer needs and boost sales
