COURSE DESCRIPTION: We live in a world of immense contradiction and irony. On the one
hand is the quantum leap in the technology of communication but it is also an age marked by a
breakdown of interpersonal communication and growing loneliness of the individual. The
complex edifice of human society seems to rest on the complex system of communication that
is changing every passing day and most studies tend to look at communication as a technology
enabled revolution. There is a concentrated focus on trying to fathom and explain the
technological aspects, be it computing speed, bandwidth, smarter smart-phones, intranets and
internet. However, it often gives the user of technology, a casual Passover! As a result, thought
the volume and speed of communication has increased, the quality and content of
communication and of human life has not necessarily improved. The course intends to critically
look at the concept of the self and the issue of perception of the other, and how a proper
realization of the two would help in effective leadership communication.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The course intends to look at the multiple perspectives of what
constitutes the self, the process of understanding the other, the nuances that may colour
persecution of both the self and the other. The primary premise of any communication process is
the existence of the sender and the receiver and the in between noise. Conventional
understanding of the sender, receiver and noise triangle that does not adequately acknowledge
the role of perception though all communication starts with two perceptions; perception of the
self and perception of the other, and these perceptions can also add to noise. But, as is the very
nature of all perceptions, the problem of maintaining objectivity emerges as a major challenge.
All good communication has to start with this basic understanding. Hence, this course intends to
lay the ground work that would enable participants to examine perceptions and contrast them
with culture and peer-ceptions.
Once this is done, the various vehicles of communication that enables one to effectively
express ones ideas, be receptive to other people’s ideas and create positive outcomes through an
exchange of ideas would be examined.

LEARNING OUTCOME: The transition from communication to effective communication would
be the primary outcome of the course. It needs to be understood that communication is a two
way process with subtle nuances. These nuances can be better understood when seen from the
prism of life and living, mortality and senseless consumerism, all exerting pressure on the
individual to shape ones basic values and engage with the world around. This course is intended
to help participants imbibe a keen understanding of the importance of the self and the world
around. Apart from introducing participants to key issues in the area of communication
management; oral communication would be posited a part of the larger process of human
communication. The fundamentals of the communication process, the various aspects of
effective communication, and the basic tools and skills of communication would be the primary
objectives of this course.
