Why it is important to learn pronunciation?

Pronunciation is one of the problems of learning English. It is the main aspect of

English that people notice when you are speaking. Problems with pronunciation
begins at school, because teaching pronunciation gets little attention. That is why,
learners continuously to imitate the words spoken by the teacher with the wrong
pronunciation, articulation and word stress. As the result, these learners have
difficulties in learning pronunciation at university, as interpreters. But it is hard to
relearn what you have been learning many years. So, I want to tell you about the
importance of pronunciation, and reasons why pronunciation is difficult to learn and
some tips of learning pronunciation.

Firstly, pronunciation is an essential thing in communication, because correct

pronunciation makes it easy to understand what speaker has said, and incorrect
pronunciation will lead to misunderstanding between non-native English speaker
and listener. That is why, we should learn correct articulation of the sounds,
pronounce it correctly and hear the differences between the similar sounds. Also, we
should remember about phonetic phenomena and intonation.

Secondly, it may be difficult to learn these parts of phonetic system. In English, most
of words have similar sounds, but have different meanings. For non-native speakers
it will be hard to understand the differences between similar sounds in their native
language and English, it is called phonetic mistake, when one phoneme is replaced
with another. The English are famous for saying one thing and meaning another –
using intonation to show meaning. English uses four intonation patterns – low fall,
high fall, low rise and high rise. The rules of English stress are simple to learn, but
impossible to see on the written page. Stress is perhaps the most important aspect of
clear speech.

Thirdly, we can improve our pronunciation. There are some tips for it. Listen to
yourself. It is necessary to record your voice and listen it, because you can hear your
pronunciation problems and correct them. Watch yourself. Stand in front of a mirror
to see the placement of your tongue, lips, and a shape of your mouth. Pay attention
to intonation and stress. You should understand where your voice is rising and
falling in the sentence. And understand where some sounds should pronounce louder
or clearer than others. Read poems, speeches and tongue twisters aloud.

In conclusion it should be said, that pronunciation has a very important role in

learning English, in communication. For me, as interpreter, it is necessary to know
how to understand and pronounce correct to be understood because this job is
connected with communication with people.
