Pump with DC Motors.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following:

1. What materials are needed in order to fabricate the parts of the as

to:

1.1. Electrical;
1.2. Electronics; and
1.3. Mechanical?
2. What are the processes that will be used in order to fabricate the

project as to:

2.1. Assembly;
2.2. Installation; and
2.3. Wiring?
3. How does technical testing be performed on the project?

4. What are the advantages of the project in terms of:

4.1. Portability;
4.2. Cost;
4.3. Power efficient;
4.4. Factor of Safety?
6

5. Based on the results, How should a mini power pump be

proposed?

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study would help the school body involved

on scholastic to assess the development of students of University

of Cebu of their academic skills. It would directly benefit the

following:

Engineering Students. They are the direct beneficiaries of the

study. The students will be able to perceive which particular skill

they need to develop more. They will be able to know their

strengths and weaknesses in each type of skill given.

Teachers. The teachers will be able to know what factor

causes the low proficiency of students in that particular skill. It will

also enable them think of possible ways in the means of teaching;

to help the students improve the skill.

Researchers. The researchers will also enable to find more

practical and efficient ways for improvement and have their study

to a higher extent. The development of this study would enable the

researchers to put the relevant theories gathered into action.

Research Environment

The study is to be conducted in the University of Cebu Main

Campus as shown in figure 1. University of Cebu is considered as

one of the Educational Institution in Cebu City, Philippines founded in

1964, offering preschool, grade school, junior & Senior High School,

undergraduate degrees, and post-graduate degrees.

Figure 2 Location of the Study

A group of young men headed by Lawyer Augusto W. Go,

formed an alliance and set up an educational institution of what was

then called the Cebu College of Commerce, then later renamed Cebu

Central Colleges (CCC). Starting with handful of enrollees, the

college was established on April 1, 1964. It grew over time and

became the University of Cebu. Its Philanthropic mantra has been

“No tuition fee increase.”

8

Research Respondents

The study utilized a sampling method in which respondents

were entitled to answer a survey. The number of respondents were

limited to chosen courses such as Engineering courses only. The

respondents are from Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,

Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering,

and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Total of 120

respondents were selected from different engineering courses, 20

respondents in each selected engineering course.

11

Research Instruments

The study utilized the researcher-made questionnaire focusing

on how academic skill on an engineering student has been developed

and how they can cope up in daily basis. The 32 item-questionnaire is

systematically prepared in document or survey form which contains

series question related to how they develop their skills. The

questionnaire consist of four parts: The first part talk about how do

they read or what are their doings when reading. The second part

focuses on their ability to write or their skills in writing. The third part

focused on their speaking skills or how confident they are when they

speak. The fourth part tackles on their listening skills or their ability to

listen and comprehend thoughts of other person. The objective of this

research is to analyze the current academic performance and

development of an engineering student in University of Cebu.

10

Research Procedure

Gathering of Data. The researcher asked permission from the

instructor to seek permission to conduct survey to the selected

respondents.

The data were collected using survey type of questionnaire which are

distributed to twenty engineering students of the chosen course. The

survey is created using appropriate questions modified from other

related studies and questions which will be prepared by the research.

The survey is composed of questions related to reading, writing,

speaking, and listening. The survey is related to respondent’s

personal awareness on how he or she develop his or her skills.

The researchers personally distributed the survey questionnaire

to the respondents and retrieval was made afterwards.

Before the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents

the researcher first asked the approval of the professor to conduct

survey in his or her students. The researcher assured the

confidentiality of the survey since writing the respondents name is

10

entirely optional. Their response will be anonymous and will never be

linked to them personally. The respondents were given time to

answer the survey honestly and effectively.

Treatment of Data. The data collected were tabulated and

analyzed. Analyses data were guided by percentage and mean.

Response to the questionnaire by the respondents are statistically

analyses and tabulated to the percentage and mean.

Simple frequency and percentage was used to rate each item

related to their academic skill based in the questionnaire.

Weighted Mean was used to identify the verbal description of

each given item whether the score is very high, high, neutral, low,

and very low. This tell as the current academic development and

performance of the respondent.

This chapter shows the researcher’s data collection on the study

of “Academic Skills Development for the Engineering Students”. The

data collected and results are presented, analyzed, and Interpreted.

Development of Engineering Student in Reading

This section presents the number of item related to how an

engineering student developed his/her skills in reading with

3.28 students who are relaxed when reading. Also most of the

students relate what they read to their own life. An average of 3.67

students who create a strategy to make his or her reading is more

effective and easier. There is also a high number of students who

take an effective notes on his or her reading with an average of 3.81.

An average of 3.51 students who make a follow question after

reading to make sure he or she understands what he or she reads.

CHAPTER 3

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary, findings, and conclusion,

and recommendations based of the study.

Summary

This study aimed to determine the development of academic

skills in engineering students in University of Cebu. The data

gathered and findings have served as the basis for the proposed

recommendation plan. Specifically, it sought to answer the following

question: What are the standings of each engineering student in their

academics in terms of; what are the problems encountered by the

students as perceived by the students themselves and instructor in

terms of; what effective means can be used and elaborated based on

the findings of the study?

24

Findings

After gathering, tabulating, analyzing, and interpreting the data,

the researchers found out that in development in reading, most of the

students does the following item in the survey. It shows that most

students always look to their assignment before reading and think

about important questions before starting to read. There are high

number of student who relate what they read in real life and uses

effective notes on their reading. Moderate amount of student relaxed

when they read textbook and some get sleepy after a period of time

reading.
26

Conclusion

Academic skills development is important for studies.

Developing one’s skill improves you and how you react to every task.

In engineering, students must know how to cope up and develop their

skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in order to boost their

skills in effective ways possible.

26

Recommendations

Student should learn how to construct a set of goals. Goals enable

a student to continuously track their progress and adjust accordingly.

Using different resources is significantly more effective than using a

single resource. Using different resources, you can gain different

contexts and perspectives, provide different associations and

analogies and can help make learning more enjoyable. Get through

frustration period, when trying to learn a new skill or material can be
