Summary: This configuration manual introduces the guidelines and principles involved in configuring
the MD5500’s functional modules, overall architecture, auxiliary devices, installation kits, delivery
accessories and external cables. It is intended for the relevant product designing department and
commercial department.
Documentation: This document is compiled and modified by HONET P3 PDT, and checked by R&D
department, telecommunication design department (bidding office), order configuration department,
and technical support department. The first version of the document is presented during the customer
pilot period, and will be updated at least once every season. After being reviewed and approved, the
document will be archived at the R&D documentation center and distributed through the marketing
technical document platform. The recipients should keep the document confidential. Any duplication
is prohibited.

MD5500 frame provides 16 slots (numbered from 0). Slots 7 and 8 are reserved
exclusively for the system boards (H511ASXA board only). The other slots are for the
service boards. The low-speed service boards can be inserted in any of slots 0~6 and
9~15, while the high-speed service boards can only be inserted in slots 9~15. All boards
unexceptionally adopt the front-leading-out mode, enabling service interface cables,
upstream optical fibers/cables to come out of the board front panels.

1. MD5500 front-access unshielded frame supports such low-speed service boards as H5-AIUA
(03033301), H5-CESH(03034857), H5-EA16(03034078), H5-DT16(03034081), and such high-
speed service boards as H5-AICA(03032773), H5-IPUO(03034366), H5-IPUE(03034364), H5-
EPUO(03034363), and H5-EPUE(03034365).
2. MD5500 front-access shielded frame supports such low-speed service boards as H5-
AIUA(03034348), H5-CESH(03035805), H5-EA16(03035804), H5-DT16(03035801), and such
high-speed service boards as H5-AICA(03035794), H5-IPUO(03035797), H5-IPUE(03035796),

BITS interface. To provide hot backup for the main control function, network switching
function, and system clock function, the system employs double H511ASXA0 boards
residing in slots 7 and 8.
H511AICA0 board:
As the ATM interface processing board, H511AICA0 board provides 599Mbit/s
upstream/downstream ATM services and flow control function. Equipped with subboards,
it can provide STM-1 and STM-4 ATM interfaces. These interfaces can serve as
upstream interface or downstream interface, depending on the actual networking
requirement. H511AICA0 board can be inserted in slots 9~15, and insertion in slots 0~6
is prohibited.
H511IPUO board:
H511IPUO board is IP service processing board. It enables broadband subscriber
management and upstream broadband service. Every board is capable of processing
service at 1Mpps, handling 2000 calls and managing 6000 on-line subscribers
simultaneously. The board can also provide such IP interfaces as FE 100M single/muti-
mode optical interface and GE single/multi-mode optical interface. These interfaces can
only be used as upstream IP interfaces. The board can be inserted in slots 9~15, and
insertion in slots 0~6 is prohibited. Up to 3 such boards can be placed in every frame. As
IPUE board alreadly incorporates FE subboard, additional subboard is not required.
H511EPUO board:
H511EPUO board, namely the Ethernet service processig board, implements the
transparent transmission for Layer 2 packets sent from PVC and FE port. It can provide
such Ethernet interfaces as FE 100M single/multi-mode optical interface and GE
single/multi-mode optical interface. The board can be inserted in slots 9~15, insertion in
slots 0~6 is prohibited. As EPUE board alreadly incorporates FE subboard, additional
subboard is not required.
Low-speed service boards:
Low-speed service boards inlcude , H511EA16 board, H511DT16 board, H512CESH
board and H511AIUA board.
These low-speed service boards can provide such interfaces as PSTN E1, CES E1, E1
ATM, IMA E1, and 10/100M Ethernet electrical interfaces. MD5500B low-speed service
board can reside in any of slots 0~6 and 9~15, and provide upstream/downstream PSTN
E1 interfaces and low-speed service interfaces.
Note:
3. H511IPUE and H511EPUE boards contain FE subboard; H511ASXA board contains CKMB
clock subboard; H511EA16, H512CESH contain E1 interface subboard;
4. To provide E3, T3 and IMA E1 interfaces, use H511AIUA board instead of H511AICA board. H511AIUA does
not support STM-4 (ATM 622M).
5. Board provisioning should consider both the number of slots in every frame, and the available services
bandwidth. In term of maximum effective bandwidth, the low-speed service board can provide 350Mbits, and
VP Ring can provide 590Mbits.

The MD5500B assembly cabinet uses METRO1000 as the transmission equipment.
Cables used for connecting MD5500B with METRO1000 include:

120ohm unshielded cables. These cables are used for connecting EA16/CESH
board with METRO1000’s E1 ports and E8IT subboard with METRO1000.

channel E1 interface ) and SP1 subboard (8-channel E1 interface).
3) There are two types of cable length: 1.8m and 2.5m. The 1.8m-long cable is for
connecting boards in MD5500B frame/MA5100 frame installed in the lower part of
the cabinet; the 2.5m-long cable is for connecting boards in MD5500B
frame/MA5100 frame installed in the upper part of the cable. When the cabinet is
only configured with one MD5500 frame, choose the 2.5m-long cable because the
frame installation follows the order of from-bottom-to-top.

3.3 External Optical Cable Package Configuration Description
1) For information about optical fiber selection, refer to Table 5.3.
2) Optical fiber connector selection should consider single/multiple mode, optical fiber
length, and the connector type at the opposite end (MTRJ, SC/PC, FC/PC).
3) The selection of optical fiber type (single mode or multi-mode) is determined by the
type of the O/E conversion interface connected with the optical fiber connector. It is
required that the O/E conversion interface should be consistent with the optical fiber
connector in term of single mode or multiple mode.
4) SC/PC is square-head connector; FC/PC is round-head connector; MTRJ is
transmit/receive integrated square-head connector. One end of the optical fiber is
MTRJ connector which integrates transmission and reception; the other end
branches into two fibers, respectively for reception and transmission.

6.2 Configuration Principles
1) There are two types of anti-lightning arresters, 110V one and 220V one. 110V anti-
lightning box is for oversea markets, while 220V anti-lightning box is for domestic
markets and oversea marketing adopting 220V power supply.
2) Anti-lightning box uses (regardless of the type) the same type of cables as 4845
power module: 04042261.
3) 24020002 and 02231819 contain battery and battery rack. These batteries should
be provided as backup power supply when the MD5500 cabinet adopts built-in
power supply and the office side demands backup power supply.
4) A piece of battery rack is necessary for any battery involved configuration. Four
batteries compose a group. How many battery groups are needed depends on the
equipment’s power consumption, and the working hours required for the batteries
when working as backup power supply. In general circumstances, 4 pieces of
100AH batteries are needed to offer more than 6 hours of backup power supply. If
the office side has special requirement, 8 pieces of 200AH batteries can be
provided to offer more than 13 hours of backup power supply. For even longer
power supply requirements, you can adopt external power supply system.
5) 25050064 is generally used in combination with 14080014 and 14990085. The
cable length is determined according to the on-site survey.
6) 06100191 and 06100184 are desktop PCs. They are used as MD5500 console. One
is for domestic delivery, and the other is for oversea delivery.
