When Is It Done? Post Termination
Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) Test
When is it done? Pre‐termination test. This test is completed after
Boskalis pull the cable in but before the cable ends are terminated.
Description: The purpose of this test is to verify the length of the
installed conductor and also look for any "ripples" in the waveform
that can indicate damage during pull‐in.
Insulation Resistance (IR) test ‐
When is it done?
This test is a basic test that involves putting 5000V on a
cable to verify the integrity of the cable insulation.
Very Low Frequency (VLF) Test
When is it done? Post termination,
Description: This is the most important test and is conducted
before Partial discharge and tan delta. This test involves
putting a high voltage down the cable to intentionally stress it.
The voltage is increased in increments up to 2.2 x operating
voltage
Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) Test
Tan δ When is it done? Post termination.
When is it done? Post termination. Description: OTDR test, verifies the fibre optic length and checks inegrity of the splices
Description: Tan Delta, also called Loss Angle or Dissipation
Factor testing, is a diagnostic method of testing cables to
determine the quality of the cable insulation. This is done to try to
predict the remaining life expectancy and in order to prioritize
cable replacement and/or injection.
Partial Discharge (PD) Test
When is it done? Post termination.
Description: A partial discharge (PD) is an electrical discharge or spark that bridges a
small portion of the insulation between two conducting electrodes. Partial Discharge can
happen at any point in the insulation system, where the electric field strength exceeds the
breakdown strength of that portion of the insulating material.
