Performance test of Mini Ice Plant

Objectives:
1. To determine the basic components of an ice plant.
2. To determine the heat balance on the laboratory model of an ice plant.
3. To determine the theoretical and actual coefficients of performance of the laboratory model
of an ice plant.
4. To determine the theoretical and actual TOR of the laboratory model of an ice plant.
5. To determine the rate of freezing in the different shapes of ice molders.

Materials needed:
1. Ball pen
2. Data sheet
3. Refrigerants tables and charts
4. Scientific calculator
5. Timer
6. Thermometer
7. Weighing scale

Basic components of an ice plant:

1. Condensing unit
2. Agitator
3. Ice defroster
4. Brine pool
5. Ice storage

Procedure:
1. Plug in the chord to the outlet.
2. Turn on the agitator.
3. Run the agitator for 5 minutes.
4. Switch-on the compressor by using the circuit breaker.
5. Wait until the brine temperature drops to -4 degrees Celsius.
6. Record the suction pressure, discharge pressure, brine temperature, and the kwh meter
reading.
7. Half fill the ice tray with water.
a. Measure the temperature of the water in the tray.
8. Put the ice tray into the brine pool and record the readings after every 30 minutes until the
water is perfectly frozen.
9. Record the time when each ice shape is frozen.
10. When the water is already frozen, remove the ice tray and put it in the ice defroster.
11. Remove the ice from the tray and put it into the storage.

Figures/Pictures:

Observations:
1. The salt was added to the water the water become muddy
2. The drop of temperature was 5c every 1 hr.
3. The pressure reading increases in the suction and discharge
4. The water did not freeze because the mini ice plant was not in use for many years resulting
low cooling rate.
