CALIBRATOR 2003 /W

GENERALLY
WHAT IS A CALIBRATOR 2003 ?
• CALIBRATOR 2003 is an electric equipment making the fertiliser spreader
100% independant of the forward speed.
• The equipment opens and closes automatically the outlets of the
spreader - in relation to the driving speed. This way a constant quantity
is ensured - independant of the driving speed.

• CALIBRATOR 2003 ensures a simple and precise calibration of the spreader,

after which the spreader is automatically adjusted for precisely the type of
fertiliser , with which the system is calibrated.

• CALIBRATOR 2003 makes it possible to vary and to adjust the required

quantity of fertiliser - over the field area.
• The stepless and non-limited adjustment means that the outlets of the
spreader are opened and closed in relation to the wanted change of the
quantity.

• CALIBRATOR 2003 watches the spreading and gives warning signals in case
of deviations and when you need to be careful.

IMPORTANT
• When mounting the equipment the instructions in the paragraph MOUNTING
must be carefully followed.

• The equipment is SET from the factory.

• If the adjustment handle does not when making the CALIBRATION go
to the following settings of
E() : 4,5
D() : 3,5
the system must be SET. ( See the paragraph SETTING).

• The equipment must only be SET once for each machine.

• If the equipment or parts of it are moved to another machine, the equipment

must always be SET.

• The SETTING can always be checked by making a CALIBRATION (without

contents in the hopper) - according to the above scale settings on the adjustment
handle.

Page 4
CALIBRATOR 2003 /W

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

• CALIBRATOR 2003 must be stored in a dry place and should not be cleaned
directly with water.
• The computer instrument can be cleaned with a moist cloth.
• When washing the machine it is not allowed to wash directly on plugs and
actuator (electric motor for adjustment). The warranty obligation will not include faults
due to water.
• When washing with high pressure cleaner all electric parts must be covered.
Cleaning of these parts are done carefully with soap water and a soft brush.
• After cleaning all the moving electric parts (actuator piston) with a thin layer of
clean oil. (E.g. hydraulic, silicone or the protection spray supplied with the
spreader).
• Plug connections are protected against corrosion and moisture by spraying
direct into the male or the female part with the supplied protection spray.
Never use normal oil or grease for this purpose!
• Make sure that the mechanical parts of the machine are easy to move. Therefore
grease every day when the spreader is in use.
• If the impulse disc / impulse sensor for speed recording is used, the system
must be kept free of mud. It must also be ensured that the distance between
sensor and impulse part is correct.
• The plugs of the CALIBRATOR 2003 should not be taken out or plugged in
when current is on.

GUARANTEE / RESPONSIBILITY
• The warranty conditions are in correspondance with Danish legislation. Service
and repair is made free of charge within 12 months from proved purchase date
- under the following conditions:
• That the arisen defect is due to construction or material faults (Normal wear, missing
maintenance and misuse cannot be accepted.)
• That the reason for the defect is not due to wrong connections / wrong mounting or
water / moisture.
• That persons without technical knowledge of the product have not tried to repair the
product.
• Compensation for person or crop damage are not chargeable to the supplier.

SAFETY
• Never put hand / object into the hopper - especially into the outlet of the
spreader when the shutters are ‘open’.
• Never try to stop the adjustment handle by hand / object.

CALIBRATION PROCEDURE
A correct calibration of the machine is vital for the precision of the spread quantity
- seen in relation to the required quantity.
• The calibration is always made before starting to spread the type of fertiliser in
question. It is important always to make a new calibration - for each new type
of fertiliser. Moreover a calibration is recommended at supply of new batches of
fertiliser and / or in cases where the weather changes considerably in relation
to the time of calibration.
• If there is oil, water or similar layers on the inside of the hopper, it is necessary
to make 2-3 calibration tests, so that the layers are removed. Use the calibration
value of the last test.
• Demount the spreading vanes on the right spinning disc.
• Mount the calibration kit on the right spinning disc.
• Fill min. 200 kg fertiliser in the right side of the hopper
• Make the PTO shaft rotate between 200 and 250 rpm/min.

Pay special attention when spreading UREA, OIL SEED RAPE or similar fine grained material. When spreading
such materials, it might be possible to correct/optimize the calibration quantity.

EXAMPLE FOR OPTIMIZING THE CALIBRATION QUANTITY:

• If the wanted quantity is for instance 350 Kg/Ha - and it turns out that the quantity
really spread is 340 Kg/Ha, the calibration value can be “optimized” by changing
it by the relation between

Kg/ha really spread
Required kg/ha n
Required Kg/Ha = 350n Kg/Ha
Quantity really spread = 340o Kg/Ha
Calibration value = 21,70 Kg

“Optimizing”= (340 / 350n) x 21,70 = 21,10 Kg

CALCULATED WEIGHT, KG (Not ()W models)

Calculated weight informs about the remaining of fertiliser in the hopper.
• Contents in the hopper is calculated from a known quantity, which is filled into
the hopper and given as input to CALIBRATOR 2003. During spreading the
calculated quantity of fertiliser spread will be deducted and the result of this
calculation is the present hopper contents.
• This means that the function can only be used when the hopper contents is
known. If you get fertiliser in bulk it would be possible to fill the spreader to the
top of the hopper so that the quantity corresponds to the exact litre contents of
the hopper. The weight of the fertiliser can then be calculated according to the
specific weight. Alternatively a weigh bridge can be used.
• The calculation is 100% precise because the quantity is calculated on the basis of
the fertilised area and the required quantity in Kg/Ha at any time.

AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION:
The automatic calibration is made on the basis of the quantity (Kg) spread
in reality – and the area (Ha) spread in reality.
• The quantity spread in reality is weighed by the built-in weight cell of the
machine.
• The real area fertilised is measured on the basis of driving speed / distance
and spread width.
When making the automatic calibration the following conditions must be
observed:
• In order to avoid influence on weight due to driving over uneven ground or
influence by the PTO – the tractor and the PTO must be stopped (Speed = 0
Km/h), when making the settings for the automatic calibration.
• The weight must ”calm down” = before pressing [ENTER].

FULLY AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION:

The FULLY AUTOMATIC Calibration is made on the basis of the real
spread qunatity (Kg) – and the real fertilised area (Ha).
Contrary to the Automatic Calibration – which is made with tractor and PTO
stopped, the Fully Automatic Calibration is made automatically when spreading
fertiliser. This means that the system is by means of a number of complicated
calculations able to make the calibration despite the bumps due to driving over the
field.

• The calculations are made once per second, and quantity corrections are made
each time approx. 100 kg are spread.

• It is important that the preset calibration value is almost in accordance with the
calibration value of the present fertiliser. Is the preset calibration value for
instance 30% higher or lower than the correct value – the system will not
spread the correct quantity – until three Fully Automatic Calibrations have
been made.

• The precision in connection with Fully Automatic Calibration is ± 0,5 - 4%

The precision in connection with Automatic Calibration corresponds to ± 1%

• The Fully Automatic Calibration is not suitable when driving on hilly areas
and is only recommended for areas with slopes of max. 4% to 5%.
When spreading on areas with as well horizontal as hilly areas the system can
be applied or not applied according to the area.

• The Fully Automatic Calibration cannot work when the hopper contents is
lower than 200 kg.

CHECK FERTILISER AND QUANTITY

• It is always a good idea to check that the machine works as expected.
3 Is anything blocking the outlet system of the machine ?
3 Is the control system well greased and closed at scale setting 0 ?
3 Is the driving speed shown in the CALIBRATOR correct and stable ?
3 Is the calibration kit mounted correctly?
3 Is the calibration value reasonable (See Typical calibration quantities)
3 Is the required quantity similar to the quantity really spread ?

• When spreading for instance UREA, OILSEED RAPE or similar fine grained
materials, it is recommended to fix the scale stop at the scale setting indicated
in the spread chart at the required quantity and speed. Use the same
procedure for reduction outlet.
• Alternatively it must be ensured that the spreading is done at a scale setting of
minimum 3.
• Alternatively it must be expected to increase the weight of the fertiliser from the
calibration by approx. 15-25%.
The flow characteristics of fine grained materials are very different from ‘normal’
types of fertiliser.
The materials are very fast running and at the same time the specific weight is low.
This together with very small application rates means that you should be most
carefull.

• In cases where you get deviations when spreading the above materials it is
recommended to follow the instructions in the paragraph: ‘CHANGE OF CALIBRATION
QUANTITY’.

QUANTITY MEASURING
CALIBRATOR 2003 can make a calculated quantity measuring in
connection with for instance the sowing machine. The quantity measuring
is made as described in the paragraph “CALCULATED WEIGHT, KG”.
• The START / STOP function is made by mounting for instance a sensor and
magnet on the handle for the tractor’s lifting/lowering arm.

Page 26

MOUNTING
In order to get full advantage of CALIBRATOR 2003, it is absolutely necessary to
exactly follow the instruction below. If the instructions are not followed and the
Calibrator is mounted in a wrong way the consequence will be that the Calibrator
may make a false adjustment that might result in corresponding incorrect
application rate when spreading.
• Fixtures are supplied with the system, but due to the differences between tractors it is
not possible to make a fixture that can be used on all tractors. It may therefore, in some
cases be necessary to adjust the fixtures.

MOUNTING ON TRACTOR
• MOUNTING OF CALIBRATOR 2003 - computer.
Fixture is supplied with the system for mounting of the CALIBRATOR 2003 -
computer.
• Fix the CALIBRATOR in a convenient place in the cabin of the tractor, in
consideration of the facts:
• That access is good so that it is easy to operate the instrument
• That the placing is convenient in relation to a minimum of sun/light into the display.
• That the CALIBRATOR cannot be wet.
• That the CALIBRATOR is fixed in such a way that it does not shake when driving or
when idling.

• BLACK is mounted to (-) frame / earth
These cables must absolutely not be inverted.

• The current cable must not be connected before all other wires are connected.
• It is recommended to connect the 12V cable so that the voltage is interrupted
when the ignition is switched off.
• Check that the current supply is stable.
• Voltage must resist min. 16 Amp.

• RECORDING OF SPEED
With the system is supplied an impulse sensor for recording directly on the
wheel hub of the tractor or alternatively on a drive shaft. (Magnetic iron).
• If rear-wheel drive – fit the sensor on the front wheel of the tractor.
• If four-wheel drive – fit the sensor on the rear wheel of the tractor.
• If using chassis kit – the sensor can be fitted on its wheel.
• It is recommended that the sensor is mounted in such a way that the
recording is made on the bolt heads of the hub. (Normally 8 units).

• ∂ The distance from sensor to hub bolt must be between 1 and 3 mm.
Bigger distance than 3 mm will result in an unstable recording of the speed.

• • The distance between sensor and fixture must not increase 50 mm.
Bigger distance might cause vibrations – and consequently an unstable recording of the speed.
In this case a robust bracket must be fabricated to eliminate rests of vibration.

• ⊂ The distance between hub and bolt must be min. 2 mm.

Smaller distance might mean recording on hub and not on the bolt head.

The mutual distance between impulse

units (hub bolts or similar), must be equal.

SPEED / DIST
This function must always be adjusted before use of the system. A correct speed is
vital for an exact spreading result and an exact spreading quantity.
• The speed can be recorded in two different ways:
• Recording of impulses from for instance tractor wheel (Impulse sensor)
(See mounting and setting)
• Often between 1 and 10 pulses/metre. (Minimum 1 pulse/metre, maximum
19,99 pulses/metre).
• Recording of impulses by the internal speed measurement (radar).
(See mounting and setting)
• Often between 50 and 150 pulses/metre. (Minimum 10 pulses/metre,
maximum 299 pulses/metre).
• Attention should be given to the fact that a radar is not necessarily
precise in a high crop.
• When counting pulses the system must always be SET to the
present sensor type.

The system is able to count the number of pulses for a given distance. This Number
of pulses should be converted into PULSE/METRE.
• Stop the tractor and 0-set the number of pulses.
• The chosen adjustment is confirmed DIST. SENSOR

• Drive a measured and precise distance, for instance 100 metres.

• The distance must be at least 100 metres.
• The number of counted pulses is divided by the distance driven and is used
under Speed/Dist.

EXAMPLE:
Measured pulses = 167 pulses
Driven distance = = 100 metrer
= 1,67 pulse/metre

LOAD CELL
Adjustment of load cell is only in question in connection with CALIBRATOR
2003W and ()W machines.
The purpose of the adjustment is to set CALIBRATOR 2003W, so that the system is
making a correct weighing of the hopper contents.
• The system must always be adjusted before putting the machine into
operation – and all equipment must be mounted.
• The hopper of the spreader is empty.
• All options are mounted on the spreader.
• The spreader is mounted in the 3-point linkage.

CHECK the adjustment, for instance by filling extra 50 kg into the hopper. The
display of the CALIBRATOR must then show the increased contents.
If the correct weight is not shown in the display -
all of the procedure must be repeated.
It is not sufficient only to repeat the last part.
• Load cell and spreader can after some time – and after heavy loads, change a
little bit. This means that the “empty weight” of the spreader – moves away
from 0 kg.
If this is the case – make a new adjustment.
• It should be noticed that the weight has steps of 1 kg – and that the weight
might “flash” 1 Kg. – even if the spreader stands still.

FLOW METER
Adjusting the flow meter is only necessary when using the wire net for other
machines (option).
The reason for adjusting the flow meter is to set CALIBRATOR 2003, so that the
system makes a correct measurement of the liquid through for instance a field
sprayer or a slurry spreader.
The adjustment is made on the basis of pulses/litre (Stated on the flow meter).

FAULT FINDING
CALIBRATOR 2003 - ON
When CALIBRATOR 2003 is started (ON), the system will make a self test of the
following units:
• SPEED sensor
• PTO sensor (Option)
• Actuator (Status A)
• Actuator (Status B)
The self test is testing if the different units are connected correctly to
CALIBRATOR 2003, or if possible faults have arisen in cables or plug connections.
If the connection is not correct the display will show “ERROR”.
• If [ENTER] is pressed, the error is accepted – and the
error will be shown again next time CALIBRATOR 2003
is started (ON). ERROR
• If [0] is pressed, the error is ignored and the error will Dist. sensor
