Advanced Research Methods
Course Facilitator: Muhammad Abbas Semester: Fall 2012 Level: MS/PhD
Time: Saturday 06:00 a.m TO 09:00 p.m Email: muhammad.abbas@riu.edu.pk

Overview & Course Objectives

This course is designed to lay the foundations of good theoretical and empirical research in the
social sciences particularly in business and management. It does not deal with specific techniques
per se, but rather with the assumptions and the logic underlying business research. Students
become acquainted with a variety of approaches to theory extension and development, research
design and analyses, and are helped to develop their own research projects.
The course will start with an introduction to the principles and methods of business research:
developing theoretical framework, choosing the appropriate design, securing the respondents,
making a test investigation, sampling methods, collecting data methods, types and errors of
collected data, tabulating and analyzing the information, interpreting the finding and stating the
conclusion, through a series of class projects. Practical experience is offered to students on how
research techniques and procedures are applied to the solution of basic and applied business
problems.

Indented Learning Outcomes

Students will also require a good understanding of substantive business contexts. The specific
course objectives are to help students develop:

(1) The ability to translate basic/applied business issues into appropriate academic research
questions;
(2) The ability to extend/falsify existing theories and/or develop new theories in the domains of
management sciences.
(3) An appreciation of the links between the issues being investigated and the method of
investigation;
(3) An understanding of the governing principles in the qualitative and quantitative research
traditions, the merits and limitations of each, and of their independent and supporting roles in
business contexts;
(4) The skills required to design and conduct research studies using qualitative and/or quantitative
methods;
(5) The ability to interpret research results and establish the substantive meaning and implications
of the findings;
(6) An understanding of the tools, obstacles, and procedures of reviewing and publishing an article
in top-tier research journals; and
(7) The ability to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by publishing research papers,
either theoretical or empirical, in journals of good repute.
