I. Background of the Author
Juan Miguel “Gege” Rivera Severo is a Filipino actor and spoken word artist
who came to fame playing Rico on the comedy series On the Wings of Love. He
received increased attention for his spoken word art when his piece "Ang Huling Tula
na Isusulat Ko para sa 'Yo" went viral in 2015.
Severo describes himself as “A writer who performs and a performer who writes”
II. Background of the Text
No one did more than Severo to popularize spoken word performances and
Filipino poetry in 2016. His heartfelt, infectious and lyrical poems won him an ardent
following and trained a mainstream light on the creation and delivery of verses.
Severo’s unlikely role as the voice of poetry for the millennial generation
first began with the viral video for his piece, Ang Huling Tulang Isusulat Ko Para Sa’yo
which was shared by thousands on social networking sites. This was followed by his
breakout role as Rico on the primetime show On The Wings of Love.
A. Isang Letra
Natikman mo na ba ako?
“Hindi pa.”
Hindi pa.
Nagustuhan ko itong dalawang salita
Tama!
Umaasa ka pa ba?
Magsisimula.
Hindi na.
May pangako ng isaang simula.
Naghihintay ka pa ba?
Hindi na. Hindi na.
Tangina.
Tama.
Mahal ko pa ba siya? pero nasa ‘yo pa rin ang mga paa ko.
Nasa’yo pa rin ako.
Sabihin mo nga:

4. TONE
FRUSTRATED
The author of the story expresses his frustration about his struggle on moving on.
How the difference one letter could have. Hence, the title “Isang Letra (One Letter)”.
He narrates how he has been with other people, did other things that might help erase
the thoughts of him/her and how he failed to forget that person.
5. THEMATIC ANALYSIS
“Healing doesn’t mean the damage never existed; it means the damage no
longer controls our lives”
The poem talks about the eagerness of the narrator to finally forget everything
that reminds him about his past lover. Although he doesn’t love the person anymore,
there is still something that awakes his pain. Healing takes time. We should not put
pressure to ourselves when it comes to this matter. There will always be a point in our
life when we will fail and stumble but the important thing is, we will use this as our
weapon to survive life.
B. Mga Basang Unan

nalalapnos kapag dahan-dahan mo akong hinahaplos at ang hininga ko ay nahahapo
at kinakapos kapag niyayapos kita.”
Hyperbole
“Kahit ilang balde na ng luha ang aking pigain mula sa mata ko, magdurugo pa
rin. Pero mas nagdurugo ako para sa tawa mo, mas nagdurugo ako para sa
patawa mo, mas nagdurugo ako sa mga yakap mo.”

Irony
“Ang sarap pala sa pakiramdam na patulugin ka ng sarili mong pag-iyak”
(1st stanza, Line 4-5)
4. SYMBOLISM
“Alak” – Beer
“Sugat” – Wound
A wound symbolizes the painful experiences of the writer which is caused by the
person he loved due to separation, betrayal or anything that can cause a wound to still
leave a scar.
bagong unan.”
In the poem, a new pillow symbolizes a new chapter of his life where he can find
another comfort zone or a thing he can rely on when he is hurt by the pain caused by
love.
“Pilat” - Scars
At this point, the author tells that the wounds he has are starting to heal but is
would still leave scars that are constant reminders of how he deeply loves the person.
5. TONE
DISTRESSED
The author of the poem expressed how troubled, sad and heartbroken he is. He
made mention how he spent most of his nights crying himself to sleep, his pillows
becoming the home his tears and all their past memories – making it soaking wet. He
cried and cried and reminisced on how he thought when they will reach this point, he
will only remember the bad times and the fights they had. Yet, what came to his mind
were otherwise – how the person made him happy, stayed on the toughest times and
never left his side.
6. THEMATIC ANALYSIS
“Crying is the Only Way Your Eyes Speak when Your Mouth can’t explain How
Things Broke Your Heart”
The poem focuses mainly on how crying became the writer’s outlet in letting out
his emotions. It became his habit to cry and to sulk almost everyday about his sadness
when he lost his lover. It is his way on letting the pain he is suffering heal. In the first
part of the poem, the poet already made mentioned how he cried so hard the day his
lover left him without any promise of coming back. He cried so much he had to dry his
pillows under the sun on the next day. He realized how good it felt being able to cry
yourself to sleep.
Crying is a common phenomenon especially in response to emotions. However,
people who cry are often dismissed as weak and unable to cope with their emotions. As
a matter of fact, many are reinforced not to cry when faced with emotional distress. It is
about time this comes to an end especially in a day and age where mental and emotional
health issues are prevailing because crying has a lot to do with it.
The feeling of being overwhelmed can be a stressful experience to the human health.
Crying is a natural response to being overwhelmed. When a person is broken, he/she is
entitled to the pain that person is feeling. So, one must let it out because when kept inside
for a long time, it can consume that person. Allow one’s self to feel the pain, cry your eyes
out and be sad. It is a part of moving on and realization will strike you when you’re tired
of doing it. Soon, all of those wounds will heal and the pain will go away.
One can cry as much as they want to. But just make sure when you’re finished, you
never cry for the same reason again.
C. Ang Huling Tula Na Isusulat Ko Para Sa ‘yo
(Salamat, G)
Huli na ito:
(Magsisimula ako uli sa umpisa.
Sa kung paanong ngitian mo ako at
tinanong kung saan ako nakatira.
Magsimula ako.)
(Mali.)
Kamusta ka?

Wala akong pakialam kung abutin ako

“At nagsulat ako noon para lang mahalin mo, kaya, patawad, pero magsusulat
ako hanggang sa maubos ko ang lahat ng salita na posibleng tugma ng
pangalan mo”
(13th Stanza, Line 1-4)
3. IMAGERY
3.1 Gustatory
Hyperbole
Metaphor
4. SYMBOLISM
In the poem, it serves as a diary for the author wherein he poured out his
pain towards his ex-lover. It symbolizes as the poet’s way of saying goodbye to
that person along with all the pain and suffering he has endured.
5. TONE
FORGIVING
The tone depicted in the poem is forgiving for the poet repeatedly says that
he will forgive his lover for all that he has done. That they must forgive each other.
The poet apologizes for giving his all and he forgives his lover for not giving him
anything in return.
6. THEMATIC ANALYSIS
From the very first stanza of the poem, great pain was already evident. How the
poet’s feelings were so bottled up, he really needed to vent it out before it ruins his insides.
He wasn’t sure how long it would take; he doesn’t care neither. All he needs is to finally
spill his guts out to his past lover.
On the later part of the poem, the author then stated to apologize. Apologizing for
his need to let himself out. It does sound sarcastic and twisted as for he is the one in pain
yet he was the one asking for redemption and forgiveness. But he asked for one thing
from the other too and that is that they may forgive one another: the poet for doing such
things and the other for the lack of. It is inarguably miserable and full of ache. To have
done a whole lot of sacrifices, maybe even more than what you could, then not be given
even a little bit in return. Ignorance is more painful than rejection.
Forgiveness is truly the final act of love. When you forgive, you are able to let go
of what’s behind you – all the pain and suffering one had given you. The poet forgave the
other for not doing the things that he deserves to feel. He cannot be devoured by the
other’s selfishness anymore for he has only loved and gave all that he can and he has
grown tired. Tired of not receiving the love he truly deserves.
