Virtual Network Switch (VNS)
The latest generation of VIMS hardware requires Ethernet-based connection. VIMSpc utilizes Virtual Network
Switch (VNS) mechanism to communicate with the machine. VNS is a software application that acts as a
switch in transferring the packets of information from one network to another using a single Network Interface
Card (NIC). VIMSpc will modify the network settings of VNS rather than the actual physical network card.
However, the laptop can be used in the field as well as in the office without changing the Settings of physical
network card.
VNS is shown as 'Caterpillar Machine Network Connection' on the PC. When VIMSpc is un-installed, VNS is
removed along with the driver files needed by the virtual adapter.
NOTE: The connected ECM and IP Address of the PC should be in the same network.
When VIMSpc connects to a machine for the first time, it prompts the user to select a physical adapter.
1. Plug VIMS cable (Ethernet cable) into the PC's Ethernet port.
NOTE: Only by doing the above step, the status of LAN adapter will be shown as "connected"
in the Select Ethernet Adapter pop-up window.
5. Select the Ethernet adapter for connecting to VIMS ECM. Make sure the selected adapter is not a wire-
less adapter and other adapters are either in disconnected or in disabled state.
6. Click OK.

Introduction
This troubleshooting instruction is intended to diagnose and troubleshoot VIMSpc common connectivity
issues. It can be in Electronic Control Modules ECMs of VIMS 3G - 2851142 , PRODUCT LINK 523 -
3518492, PL Elite - 459-0786 on Ethernet port, and VIMS ABL2M - 327-3520, VIMS 68K - 130-5131, TPM
ABL1M - 169-0489, TPM Legacy - 3E-7841, PCS A4M3 - 252-2422, PCS Legacy - 148-6376 on Ethernet port.
VIMSpc incorporates the previous VIMSpc connect software that connects to machines with VIMS 3G,
through a network cable attached to the user laptop and VIMS 3G service port. VIMSpc handles the IP
addresses involved when connecting.
If the connection gets hung up, kill VIMSpc.exe, open Windows Task Manager (using ctrl+alt+del) and look in
processes for VIMSpcNet.exe. If running, terminate the process. Then start VIMSpc again and try to recon-
nect.
If VIMSpc is not connected, try connecting to another Ethernet by opening "Network Connections", from Con-
trol Panel. If the Local Area Connection shows "Unplugged" but is not unplugged, disable and then enable the
device. It should be connected.
The user must be alert to potential hazards. He should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to
perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings
are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate
every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication
and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive.
If a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used,
ensure that it is safe to use. Also check that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by the operation,
lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedures that are used.

Step 1
Refer to VIMSpcSelfCheck.log in the "Step 6: Gather Log Files and Status Report" of "VIMSpc Failed to Con-
nect to VIMS 3G Machine using version 2015A or later" section to ensure that the Caterpillar Machine Net-
work Connection has been installed and correctly referenced to the appropriate Local Area Connection port.
Step 2
Identify the Correct Network Adapter and set obtaining the IP address automatically
Plugging into a live Ethernet network will toggle the status of the local area connection network adapter. Once
this is plugged in, monitor the status of the Network Connections of PC and verify which one will change. This
can be performed on a powered ON machine with VIMS ethernet cable or USB to ethernet adapter.
1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > View network status and tasks > Change
adapter settings.
2. The list of available network connection appears. Connect the live Ethernet cable into the PC.
NOTE: If the preferred Caterpillar Machine Network or Local Area Connection is disabled, right-
click and select Enable on the disabled network adapter.
3. Change the general settings of both Caterpillar Machine Network Connection and Local Area Con-
nection to "Obtain IP Address Automatically".
5. The Local Area Connection Properties pop-up appears. Select the Internet Protocol Version 4

6. The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties pop-up appears. Select Obtain an IP address
automatically.
Step 1: Verify the Air Card (Cellular Card) is removed and Virtual Private Network (VPN) is not con-
nected.
Air Card
If the air card is installed, the Caterpillar Network Adapter will try to access the Air Card's Network con-
nection. When the Caterpillar Network Adapter is connected to the Air Card's Network, the physical Local
Area Network Port will not be utilized, which is required. So the Cat® Network Adapter will try to utilize the air
card's physical port.
NOTE: Ensure that the air card is removed and the network adapter status is shown as disabled.
1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > View network status and tasks > Change
adapter settings.
2. The following screen appears. Right-click on the air card network adapter and select Disable.
VPN
If VPN is active, the communications intended to go to the VIMS ECM may get routed through the VPN
portal. You are advised to disconnect the VPN.
Install and use the Cable As. 3055528 between the VIMS 3G Service Port (Cab or Bumper) and the PC
equipped with VIMSpc. Ensure that the cable is installed properly and secure. Also observe the LAN port
status lights. If the machine power is ON and status light is blinking, then the cable is installed correctly.
1. Try unplugging and plugging in the RJ45 connector back of PC to check whether there is a loose or
intermittent connection.
a. Try the same with service port connector.
2. If the status lamps are not blinking, ensure that the cable is in good shape and not broken or in dis-
repair.
a. Observe the condition of pins in the cable and the service port connector.
b. Ohm out wiring between the service port connector and the VIMS ECM.
c. Ohm out the connection between download cable RJ45 connector and service port connector.
3. Try to connect another service cable or plug in to another machine, or plug into an official local area net-
work to verify the function of status lamps.
The VIMSpc Diagnostic Script VIMSpc 2012A or VIMSpc 2015A master database 15.2.0 update or later can
be found at:
Ensure that the local area connection and Caterpillar Machine Network Connection must be enabled.
Refer"Troubleshooting in Connectivity" on page 47 for the steps to enable the Local Area Network Adapter
under Step 2 section.
NOTE: Verify which network adapter is associated with the physical LAN port in PC.
6. Click OK.
The above screenshot shows that the VIMS Main ECM runs with the earlier versions of VIMS software.
The “Software Group Description” for earlier versions of VIMS software doesn’t have “Underscore” in the
string (e.g., VIMS3G 7.2 Production 1 ). If yes it would need a custom IP address (i.e., Manual PC Network
configuration change in order to configure the PC and VIMS Main ECM to be in a same subnet mask range).
The above screenshot shows that the VIMS Main ECM runs with the newer versions of VIMS software.
The “Software Group Description” for newer versions of VIMS software would have “Underscore” in the string
(e.g., PLGSM_Q3_PROD_2.0). For newer versions of VIMS software, Custom IP address (i.e., Manual PC
Network configuration is not needed).

addresses. An "*" is a wild card, and adding in place of IP address octets will allow any number
to be populated in that octet.
If the VIMS IP address has changed, then add an additional IP address exception. Contact
your network administrator for further queries.
Troubleshooting in Installation
Installation hangs
Cause #1
Several factors can cause this condition. Other processes or programs may be using lots of system
resources, leaving insufficient resources for the installation to complete as normal.
Solution #1
Open the Windows Task Manager and examine the figures shown on the Performance tab. If the CPU is run-
ning at 100%, the system is probably just very busy and you should leave the installation to complete in its
own time. It is unusual for the system to be at 100% CPU for very long unless something very resource–
intensive is running. If something else is using a lot of resources, consider running the installation at a later
time. If no processes are known to be running and nothing obvious shows up when checking, it may be
prudent to run a virus scan to determine if a virus has made its way into the system.
Cause #2
Solution #2
Check that you have sufficient disk space to complete the installation. If there is not enough disk space avail-
able to install the VIMSpc, a message will display telling you how much disk space you need to free up. Once
enough disk space has been made available, begin the installation again.
Cause #3
Solution #3
The system may be hung or become unstable. Check for other programs that are still running and responding,
and check the Applications tab of the Task Manager to see whether any programs have a status of Not
Responding. If any applications are not responding, close them and see if the installation process continues.
If not, you may have to exit the installer and try again after the system resumes.
Cause #4
Installation crashes for no apparent reason and VIMSpc doesn't work as expected.
Solution #4
Solution #1
Check the below given system properties such as Local Administrator Group, Local Security Policy, and Per-
sonal Folder. Then uninstall VIMSpc and DB2 Database and try reinstalling VIMSpc.
User installing VIMSpc should be in the local administrators group, not as domain administrator.
4. Click Manage User Accounts. The User Access Control pop-up window displays. Click Yes.
NOTE: A few examples of domain administrator groups given in the above screen are AP and
NA.
User or user's group should be in the "Access this computer from the network" under local security policy.
1. Click Start and type 'secpol.msc' in the search box. The search results are displayed.
4. Under Security Settings, click Local Policies > User Rights Assignment, and double-click on the
Access this computer from the network.
5. The Access this computer from the network Properties screen displays.
NOTE: The user and user's group found are Administrators and Authenticated Users.
Personal Folder
User's personal folder in registry editor should be on local hard drive, not in network drive. The personal folder
should be set to %USERPROFILE%\Documents.
l HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Soft-
ware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Personal
l HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders\Personal
NOTE: By default, the personal folder is set to %USERPROFILE%\Documents. If not, copy the cur-
rent values of personal folder and change it to %USERPROFILE%\Documents. You can restore per-
sonal folder values after the DB2 installation, if required.
1. Click Start and type 'regedit' in the search box. The search results are displayed.
4. In left pane, click Computer > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Cur-
rentVersion > Explorer > Shell Folders > Personal. Double-click on the Personal folder to make
NOTE: Also check for the personal folder value in the following path HKEY_CURRENT_
USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell
Folders\Personal in the same Registry Editor screen.
After the DB2 database installation, if there are any problems, check User Rights Assignment in the below
screen. In particular, the user 'db2admin' needs to be a member of the User Right Assignment "Log on as a
service" or else the DB2 service will not be operational and VIMSpc will not be able to connect to the DB2
database.
While trying to run VIMSpc the following error message appears 'Couldn't connect to VIMSpc Database'. The
problem is caused because the database is not created.
Solution #1
1. Go to Start > All Programs, click IBM DB2 > DB2_VIMSPC (Default) > General Administrative
Tools > Control Center.
3. Under All Systems, click Expand icon to check if Database instance (DB2_01) is created as
shown below.

below.
11. Type db2cmd in the Start. The db2cmd.exe appears. Right-click and select Run as Administrator.
12. The db2cmd screen appears. Type db2set in the cmd. The following screen appears.
13. The following commands need to be executed when these values are not set in the above screenshot.
db2set DB2CODEPAGE=1208, db2set DB2TERRITORY=1, db2set DB2COUNTRY=1, & DB2_
GRP_LOOKUP=LOCAL, TOKENLOCAL.
14. Type DB2STOP to stop the DB2 services. The following success message appears.
15. Type DB2START to start the DB2 services. The following success message appears.
In VIMSpc Merge screen, when the user select VIMS files to merge into VIMSpc database for reporting, the
following error message is displayed if the Java components are not installed.
Solution #1
1. Go to Start and select > Control Panel, and click View By list and select Large Icons or Small
Icons.
3. The Java Control Panel pop-up appears. Under Security tab, check the Enable Java content in the
browser.
NOTE: For lower versions of Java, open the web browser, go to Tools > Internet Options >
Advanced tab to enable the java content.
4. Click OK.
Solution #1
VIMS database files (.mdb), VIMSpc application, and all DB2 database applications should not be kept open
while running the VIMSpc update, doing so will result in loss of data. User would be prompted to close the
existing opened VIMS mdb files if any, before proceeding update.
Following screen displays while trying to run the update when VIMSpc is running. Exit from VIMSpc and try
installing the update.
