The Science and Technology Editors League of the Philippines (SENTINEL) is a new alliance that
aims to unite Filipino science- and technology-oriented high school and college publications for the
development of local science and technology and for the genuine industrialization of our nation. As science
journalists, we believe it is our duty to uncover the truth about the state of S&T in the country and, in
uncovering the truth, lay the foundations for the future policies and reforms that could change Philippine
science and technology for the better.

This year, SENTINEL brings you SENTX 2019: Contextualizing Science Journalism in the Philippines,
a two-day seminar-workshop event to be held on September 7 – 8, 2019 (Saturday to Sunday), at
University of the Philippines – Diliman Campus. It will be open to all high school and college students
interested in exploring and honing their skills in the field of science journalism. The event will feature
discussions and activities on the proper orientation of viewing science journalism as a transformative force
in nation-building, workshops on science journalism, as well as talks on the current state of S&T, particularly
in the Philippine setting. Awards will also be given out to the best works produced in the workshop session,
divided into the High School – English, High School – Filipino, College – English, and College – Filipino
categories.

Specific topics covered by the speakers in the seminar part of the event are as follows:

1. General discussion on science journalism and contextualizing science journalism in the Philippines;
2. Current state of science and technology in the Philippines; and
3. Experiences of science journalists in the Philippines.

For the workshop part of the event, SENTX 2019 will focus on science writing and layout design, while
the output will be science writing articles in English and Filipino.

This event is aligned with the League’s goals to develop the skills of member publications as well as youth
journalists in general, to campaign for the advancement of S&T in the country through facts-based and
critical journalism, and to spread awareness of the state of Philippine S&T. And in thus doing so, unifies the
Filipino people in calling for the development of local S&T and for the genuine industrialization of the
country.

Its specific objectives are as follows:

1. To introduce science journalism as a transformative force in nation-building;

2. To hone the writing skills and learned approaches of aspiring science journalists; and
3. To orient the participants on the current state of Philippine S&T.
