AIM
The aim of the project is to construct and test the

hydrophobicity of different samples. This attempt shows that
the changes occurring at the nano level facilitates the
hydrophobic nature of the cloth or the samples used.
INTRODUCTION
Nanotechnology can be defined as the manipulation of matter through certain

chemical or physical processes to create materials with specific properties
which can be used in various applications. It is the ability to measure,
manipulate and manufacture things on an atomic level usually between 1-100
nm. They have a large surface area to volume ratio which is their most
important feature responsible for the widespread use of these nanomaterials. In
chemistry, Hydrophobicity is the physical property of a molecule that is
seemingly repelled from a mass of water.
Hydrophobic molecules tend to be nonpolar and thus prefer other neutral

molecules and nonpolar solvents.
Because water molecules are polar, hydrophobes do not dissolve well among
them.
Hydrophobic molecules in water often cluster together forming micelles.

Water on hydrophobic surfaces will exhibit a high contact angle.This has
motivated an upsurge in research on the synthetic routes that allows better
control of liquid repellency for various Nano technological applications.
Due to the extreme repellence and in some cases bacterial resistance of

hydrophobic coatings, there is much enthusiasm for their wide potential uses
with surgical tools, medical equipment, textiles, and all sorts of surfaces and
substrates.
Hydrophobic coatings have important applications in maritime industry. They

can yield skin friction drag reduction for ships' hulls, thus increasing fuel
efficiency.
Hydrophobic coatings can also reduce corrosion and prevent marine organisms
from growing on a ship's hull.
Materials and Methods:
Various everyday objects were used to demonstrate the hydrophobicity. The RTV
silicone sealant and paint thinner were bought from a local hardware store. Other
materials were collected from different areas.
PREPARATION & PROCEDURE
50 ml of paint thinner along with 5gms of RTV silicone sealant were weighed.
The thinner and sealant are mixed thoroughly in a glass beaker throughout such
that sealant dissolves completely. The samples are now soaked for 10 minutes in
the beaker. After 10 minutes the samples are taken out and left to dry. Using
micro pipette, small drops of water are poured on the samples. The samples are
moved from one side to other side to test the falling off of the liquid.
RESULTS
All the samples exhibited the property of hydrophobicity.

SIMILARITY WITH THE CONTACT ANGLE:
This picture demonstrates the similarity of the contact

angle formed experimentally and theoretically.
INFERENCE
As a result of this study, hydrophobic materials were obtained successfully in

an easy and less time consuming way.

providing us with the opportunity of preparing this project report for the subject
of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ECE1006).
This project work binds up a combined experience of working with the nano
particles along with learning the working and uses of various components. It
taught us various approaches towards Nano materials while working. It would be
a bright opportunity to work on any such project work in future too.
