HYDROLOGY

HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
Surface Water Hydrology
GROUNDWATER HYDROLOGY

The subdivision of the science of hydrology that deals with the occurrence,
movement, and quality of water beneath the earth’s surface.
Interdisciplinary scope involves physical, chemical, biological, and mathematical
sciences.
Contrary to impressions of rapid movement observed for streams in caves, the
movement of most ground water is exceedingly slow.

SOURCES OF DATA
COMMON UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

 Stream and river flows -m3/s, cfs, sec-ft

 Groundwater and water supply flows - gpm, gph, gpd, mgd
 Flows in agriculture and water storage-acre-ft/unit time, acre-in/hr, in or cm
depth/unit time
 Volume- gallons, cubic ft or m, acre-ft, second-foot-day, in or mm or cm depth
 Rainfall depths - inches, centimeters, millimeters
 Rainfall rates - inches, centimeters, millimeters per hour
 Evaporation, transpiration, infiltration rates - in or cm depth per unit time

HYDROLOGIC EQUATION

EXAMPLE:

In lake,
P+R+B–F–E-T=S
P- precipitation
R- rainfall excess or runoff
B- subsurface flow
F- infiltration
E- evaporation
T- transpiration
S- storage
