What’s in a Birthday?

For some a birthday is a joyous event, especially for the young. Birthdays mean presents and
being the center of attention. Birthdays mean surprises and all the cake we can eat.
Through out it all, whether we are ready or not, birthdays will come.
Birthdays don’t slow down, they speed up. Then one day we wake up and say, “Where has my
life gone?”
“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour,
that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14).

I. We Can Be Mixed Blessings To Others

“And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all
his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his
servants. And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into
Pharaoh’s hand” (Gen. 40:20-21)
In this incident, Pharaoh used his birthday as an occasion to show his power over his servant. He
showed his power by restoring his butler. While this is true, we too, could sometimes might use
our birthday celebrations to boast or to embarrass somebody.

II. We Can Be Harmful To Others

“But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and
pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a
charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him
at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his
head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.”
(Matt. 14:6-11).

This incident reminds us that not all birthday celebrations create happy moments for everybody.
It could be a day where some are happy, while some are not.

A. God’s Heroes Of The Faith Seemed To Ignore Their Birthdays
There’s no record in the Bible wherein prophets, apostles and heroes of faith celebrated
their own birthdays, but rather they celebrated other noteworthy accomplishments. In
these celebrations, they emphasized not their own, but God’s accomplishments. These are
the following:
a. The Passover
b. The Day of Atonement
c. Pentecost
B. Three Perspectives On Life
1. The gloomy perspective
a. Life can be worse than death if there is no purpose, direction or accomplishment
b. Death can be worse than life if there is no hope in eternity
c. Life or death can be miserable to those who live it selfishly
d. Life or death can be miserable for those who life it godlessly
2. The dull perspective
a. Death can be better than life if we know the Lord (Eccl. 7:1)
b. Death can be better than life if that is what God chooses for us
c. Death can be better than life if that is what gets us to Christ
d. Death can be better than life if we die in the Lord
- For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Phil. 1:21)
3. The bright perspective
a. Life can be better than death if the Lord blesses our life.
b. Life can be better than death if we are serving the Lord
c. Life can be better than death if we are bringing other’s to the Lord
d. Life can be better than death if we meet the Lord in the air
