The applicant is applying for a PhD position in a European materials science program. They studied chemical engineering and polymer science in Taiwan, obtaining master's degrees. They then worked for three years in a radiopharmaceutical lab, gaining skills in chemical analysis and developing new analytical methods. Studying abroad was not the initial plan but the applicant believes it will allow them to learn advanced techniques, broaden their perspective, and help Taiwan's industry by bringing knowledge back home. They are motivated to continue learning and expanding their knowledge and skills.

I am writing to express my great interest in applying for a position of
PhD-student in European Joint Doctoral Programme in Materials Science and Engineering. I studied chemical engineering in National Taiwan University during 2003-2007. In these four years, beside the required courses in engineering, I also took courses like Economics, Accounting Principles, Japanese, General Psychology, etc. I believed that learning all kinds of science could let me think in different angles thus help my career of becoming an engineer. Later on, I obtained a master’s degree in Polymer Science Engineering in 2009 at the same university. My master thesis was about developing a biocompatible porous scaffold as a wound dressing material. After graduation, I worked in Radiopharmaceutical Characterization Laboratory (RPCL) at Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) for almost 3 years. It was a challenge for me because I have not much experience of chemical analysis but I managed to learn the experimental skills within a few months. My research in RPCL was radiopharmaceutical analysis, focusing on identifying impurities of new drugs or developing new quantitative analytical method for biological samples. By conducting laboratory activities, I sharpened my critical thinking and analysis as well as acquired advanced skills and techniques. Study abroad was not my option in the first place, but after three-year’s working, I realized that if I ever wanted to make a contribution to the country, I have to learn advanced techniques and bring them back some day to help the nation’s industry. Taiwan is one of the world’s largest suppliers of semiconductors, so I believe material science would be the best choice for me if I want to work in the industry as my career. Another advantage of Studying abroad is that I can learn to do things in different ways, to think from different angles. Since I’ve learn doing research individually during the time in graduate school and working at INER in Taiwan, now I want to broaden my perspective and expand my vision. Pursuing a better life is what makes me aggressive and never stop learning. I am eager for knowledge and I would be grateful for your consideration of my candidacy.
